SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES
A nonexempt position responsible for performing a variety of duties in the medical practice. Involved in both the clinical and administrative areas including assisting physicians with patient care and handling clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical service
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job or to require that other or different functions be performed when circumstances change or exigencies require (this includes but is not limited to emergencies, changes in personnel, workload, rush jobs, or technological developments).- Uses customer service principles and techniques to deal with patients calmly and pleasantly;
- Performs pre-visit planning on scheduled patient;
- Collects and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis, as needed;
- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, undressing and dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls, and providing pertinent information;
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing and updating electronic medical record to ensure that information is complete;
- Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to protocols; cleaning visit/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms;
- Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor;
- Provides basic patient care as ordered. Obtains vital signs, administers medications and treatments as directed. Assists other healthcare professionals in performing exams, diagnostic procedures and treatments, and minor medical procedures. Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines and confidentiality policies;
- Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities, which may include medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping and autoclaving; checking vital signs or instruments; physical examination preparations; clinical pharmacology; drug administration through various routes including injections; prescription verifications with physician's orders; minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; therapeutic modalities; instructing patients with home care; laboratory procedures including Occupationa1 Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA-waived testing; capillary punctures and venipunctures; specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum; electrocardiography emergency triage) and first aid;
- Promotes wellness by providing patient education materials, communicating physician advice/instructions;
- Communicates with other team members in clinical and clerical area to provide a successful patient centered practice;

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma~ or general equivalency diploma (GED), medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a community college course in medical assisting. Appropriate certificate indicating passing grade for medical assistant exam preferred. Certified medical assistant certification preferred.
EXPERIENCE/OTHER REQUIREMENTSDocumented evidence of externship completed in a medical office or facility.
Current documentation of a national certification for the registered medical assistant (RMA) through the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or for the certified medical assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), is required. Must possess current health records with the appropriate immunizations to work in the health care field (hepatitis B and tuberculosis).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with stepping on the scale and exam table. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies. Occasional stress from dealing with many staff and patients.
