RESOLUTION
of the
JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION

WHEREAS, three of the Jackson County School District’s schools are located on Yellow Jacket Boulevard in the St. Martin community; and

WHEREAS, the safety of the two thousand eight hundred students attending these schools, as well as the teachers and parents is a major concern of the Jackson County Board of Education; and

WHEREAS, Jackson County School District operates fifty school buses twice daily, conducts athletic events in the evenings and on weekends, and will operate, in the event of a hurricane, a government approved hurricane shelter at St. Martin High School on Yellow Jacket Boulevard, and;

WHEREAS, one hundred thirty eight multi-family housing units were recently constructed with an entrance and exit on Ft. Bayou Road with another two hundred thirty three single family units under construction; and

WHEREAS, the Social Science Research Center at Mississippi State University reports eleven traffic accidents in 2010 with two injuries, twenty four traffic accidents in 2011with fifteen injuries, and eleven traffic accidents with one injury and one fatality in the first five months of 2012 on Ft. Bayou between Quail Creek and Washington Avenue; and

WHEREAS, the Jackson County Board of Education is resolute in their appeal that the improvements on Yellow Jacket Road and Ft. Bayou Road be completed without delay to alleviate the traffic congestion, road hazards, and prevent accidents, injuries and any additional fatalities; and

BE IT, THEREFORE, RESOLVED that the Jackson County Board of Education does hereby request the assistance of the Mississippi Department of Transportation to facilitate the construction of the proposed road improvements on Yellow Jacket Boulevard and Ft. Bayou Road.
