Discover GALILEO Project

May 2013

Background and Next Steps

Following a rapid implementation beginning in June 2012 to replace the 360 federated search service, the Discover GALILEO (EBSCO Discovery Service) search of GALILEO resources (baseline) was released on the GALILEO homepage for all 400 institution profiles on October 1, 2012.

From October through April, the project has focused on loading catalogs and configuration of EBSCO’s AZ and LinkSource products.

Many positive comments have been received since the launch:

•  "A patron came in looking for books on the historic uses of mercury for a graduate level physics class, and was finding it very frustrating not being able to find any books or reliable web sources on such a specific and academic topic in our public library. In less than five minutes, GALILEO had provided thousands of articles ranging from the effects of using mercury in dental fillings to uses in spiritual practices to a branch of Ayurvedic alternative medicine called Rasashaasta, or "the study of mercury", in which toxic substances like mercury are used therapeutically. The patron was thrilled to find so much great and reliable information at his fingertips!" -- Screven County Library

•  "Totally impressed with the journal and magazine articles that I found on running for exercise. There was even an article about tempo vs. interval running that has a nice little chart for running novices like me! Some of the articles even talk about injury prevention and marathoning. " -- Gwinnett County Public Library

•  “"’I Found’ an amazing article on Galileo needed for a presentation for class. One of the first journals to appear was the Journal of Social & Clinical Psychology. I was provided a very in-depth research analysis that explored my subject more than I anticipated. Galileo is certainly a great tool for students of any background and/or field!” -- Atlanta Metropolitan State College

Embed code for use in adding GALILEO search boxes to library websites and other webpages such as online courseware became available on November 20 – an “embed” button by the search box on the homepage makes this very easy, similar to the familiar feature in YouTube.

All of the University System catalogs have been loaded into EDS and are now live in production for searching via GALILEO. The last group went live on May 13th.

A schedule for loading the catalogs of five electing private academic colleges as well as the technical colleges is being developed, with the goal of completing all by September. The new catalogs for the consolidating USG institutions are also scheduled for inclusion as soon as they are ready for use. The PINES catalog and non-PINES public libraries are being scheduled as well.

GALILEO has been working with EBSCO on basic configuration of AZ and LinkSource for all GALILEO institutions, with the exception of those that already have EBSCO AZ accounts and those libraries that will be migrating from another AZ solution. The goal is to complete all basic configurations by July 1, at which point libraries will be able to participate in training to self-manage and localize Discovery, AZ, and LinkSource if they elect to do so.

In most cases, the workflow for the next steps of the Discovery project will be as follows:

1.  Library catalog loaded into Discovery (optional in for private colleges and universities)

2.  Local content analysis

3.  Local content added to Discovery and EBSCO AZ and LinkSource

4.  Elective configuration and training process for libraries for hands-on management capabilities of EBSCO Discovery Service and EBSCO AZ and LinkSource

Based on this process flow, the following milestones are planned for the rest of FY13 and the first part of FY14.
