Favourablelocation of Ukraineon interception of main transit flows between Europe and Asia, availability of the Black Sea non-frozen ports, developed railroad, road, and pipeline networks on both latitude and meridian directions create all preconditions for increasing volume of transit. Over the 2005205.6 mln. t of transit goods have passed through Ukraine’s territory. The freights that prevailed were oil and products of its distillation, bituminous materials and mineral wax (76.5 % of total freight). Among all modes of transport pipeline plays the key role (62.2% of total transit), then railway (35.6 %).
The air space of Ukraine is actively used. The annual number of transit flights performed by international air companies increased by two times over the last five years.
In 2005, 14 Ukrainian air companies were engaged in international regular passenger transportation to 46 countriesby 132 routes*1. Among them, most passengers traveled by AeroSvit company and International Airlines of Ukraine. Regular flights to Kyiv were performed by 36 international air companies and 65 foreign cities have direct air connections with Kyiv 65 foreign cities.
Among the services rendered by Ukraine to other countries in 2005transportation services held the largest share – 73 % (USD 4.5 bln.), of which pipeline services accounted for 43.7 %, railway trains–17.9 %, sea vessels – 17.4 % and air transport – 12.5 %.
There are 20 commercial seaports, 4 fishing and 11 river ports in Ukraine, which are treated 152,1 mln. t of freight. Exports of goods (48 %) and transit of commodities (33 %) dominate in the freight flow passing through Ukrainian ports.
