Decomposition
Rules for ALL compounds: Decomposed by heat or Insoluble compounds decomposed by water. ALL SOLUBLE compounds decomposed by water break into their individual ions
1) Binary Ionic Compounds decompose into Metals and Non-Metals
2) Metallic Oxides decompose into a Metal and Oxygen (except Ag, Hg, Au, Pt)
3) Metallic Halogens decompose into a Metal and Halogen
4) Metallic Hydroxides decompose into a Metallic Oxide and Water
5) Ammonium Hydroxide decomposes into Ammonia and Water
6) Ammonium Carbonate decomposes into Ammonia, Carbon Dioxide and Water
7) Ammonium Nitrate decomposes into Ammonium and Nitrate
8) Metallic Nitrates decompose into Metallic Oxide, Nitrogen Dioxide gas and Oxygen gas
9) Metallic Carbonates decompose into Metallic Oxide and Carbon Dioxide
10) Metallic Bicarbonate decomposes into Metallic Carbonate, Carbon Dioxide and Water
11) Metallic Sulfates decompose into Metallic Oxide and Sulfur Trioxide gas
12) Metallic Chlorates decompose into Metallic chlorides and Oxygen gas
13) Hydrogen Peroxide decomposes into Water and Oxygen gas
14) Ternary Acids decompose into Water and a Gas.
Double Replacement:
1) An Acid and Base combine to form Salt and Water
2) Ammonium Salt and Soluble Base combine to form a Salt and Ammonium Base (the Ammonium Base the decomposes into Ammonia and Water)
3) A Metallic Sulfite and Acid combine to form a Metallic Sulfate and Sulfite Compound (the sulfite compound decomposes into Sulfur Dioxide gas and Water)
4) Metallic Carbonate and Acid combine to form a Salt and Carbonate Compound ( the carbonate compound decomposes into Carbon Dioxide and Water
