What is the Community Project?

The 6th grade Community Project is a year-long, independent project. It is a required project for all 6th grade PPS students.

The purpose: Students will apply skills they are learning and evaluate issues that are important to them. Students will generate ideas and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. They will communicate with their peers through presentations at the end of the school year.

Participants: All 6th grade students are expected to participate in the project. Students will be assigned to a group of at least three and no more than four.

Supervisor: All projects must be supervised by their 7th period teacher, Mrs. L. Eiland (Design Teacher).

Example projects: performances, visual arts, scientific/technology innovation, multimedia piece, speeches

Each student will keep up with the ongoing process of their community project by notekeeping in a process journal.

What will be included in the journals:

You must use your process journal regularly and can be completed on google docs.

RESEARCH

Research will be noted in your process journal. Online sources are not always reliable. Your supervisor will give you details on approved online sources.

Interviewing experts can give you valuable information.

Your supervisor will give you additional guidelines regarding the honesty policy.

Your supervisor will offer examples of questions that will need to be answered regarding your specific project.

PRESENTATION

At the end of the community project, your group will present your project to a class of your peers.

●  Presentation time is 15 minutes.

●  Each group member will speak during the presentation.

●  The academic honesty policy is in full effect during all times of this project.

●  The proposal for action will be completed and turned in at the time of presentation.

●  The process journal questions, drawings, diagrams, and any digital copies of information should be completed at the time of presentation.

●  Bibliography (use easybib.com) All sources have to be cited.
