Bellringer:

Draw the hamburger model of a five-paragraph essay. Label each part of the hamburger with the name of the paragraph.

Set:

1.  We’re going to start off today by playing a game. There are 20 cards up around the room. Each card has information about a movie. There are ten movies and ten pairs of cards; each pair has one card with the major action of a movie and another card with the end to that movie. When I say “go,” you can get up out of your seat and look for a pair. When you find a pair, take them off the board/windows/wall and you will get a ticket. There will be no talking, and if anyone starts acting up, that person will have to sit out. If more people act out, we will stop the game immediately and go straight to note-taking. Who can tell me what the game is?

2.  TSW match pairs, and then discuss the activity.

3.  What were we doing in this activity? (Today we’re going to be talking about concluding paragraphs. Anyone know why we would do this activity? What is a strategy for finding a pair even if you have never seen the movie? Matching up characters’ names, plot events, etc.) We were matching the beginning and middle of a movie to its end.

4.  Today we are going to talk about concluding paragraphs—the endings of our essays—and work on coming up with conclusions that match the rest of our essay. Concluding paragraphs have to match up to the introduction and body paragraphs, and they follow a very particular structure. In this period, we will learn what the parts are of the conclusion paragraph, and then we will practice writing our own conclusion paragraphs. Who can raise their hand and tell me what we are going to accomplish those objectives?

Procedures:

1.  Bellringer (5 min)

2.  Set (10 min)

3.  Notes: Conclusions have two main characteristics (10 min)

  3. “Think back to the movie matching game—the end will echo some of the things that happen (clues: character names, etc).”
  4. Move beyond the argument
  5. Provide a solution
  6. make a prediction
  7. expand the theme
