ENGLISH 205—WORLD FOLKLORE: SLOS AND METHODS OF ASSESSMENT/MEASUREMENT

SLO = Student should be able to compose a tentative definition of the term “folklore.”
A/M = Student will be asked to provide a tentative definition of the term “folklore” on a quiz
or test.

SLO = Student should be able to identify the five fundamental characteristics of folklore.
A/M= Student will be asked to identify the five fundamental characteristics of folklore on a
quiz or test.

SLO = Student should be able to identify verbal, material, and cultural folklore
A/M = After watching a video of Christmas traditions and events in Switzerland, the student will
list the items of verbal, material, and cultural folklore he/she identified in the video.
OR
During the course of the semester, the student will bring to class items she or he will
identify and explain as verbal, material, or cultural folklore in a presentation before the
class.

SLO = Student should be able to explain the concept of “ethnicity.”
A/M = Student will be asked to explain the concept and provide an example on a quiz or
test.
OR
The student will be presented a cultural scenario that revolves around the concept of
“ethnicity” and will be asked to explain the concept of “ethnicity” as it applies to the
scenario and to justify his or her answer.

SLO = Student should be able to identify the seven basic characteristics of a “folk group.”
A/M = Student will be asked to write a paper that identifies a folk group to which the
student belongs, including and discussing the seven basic characteristics to justify the
group as a “folk group.”

SLO = Student should be able to identify the folkloric Trickster archetype.
A/M = Student will be asked to identify the Trickster archetype in a variety of folktales from
different cultures.

SLO = Students should be able to read and comprehend a passage of text, for example, an act
from a play, a chapter from a novel, a short story, a lyric, or an essay.
A/M = Student will be asked to explain the passage on a quiz or test.

SLO = Students should be able toanalyze a passage of text, for example, an act from a play, a
chapter from a novel, a short story, a lyric, or an essay.
A/M = Student will be asked to interpret the passage on a quiz or test.

SLO = Students should be able to recognize the influence of folklore on everyday life or current
culture.

A/M = Students will be asked to provide examples of verbal, material, and/or cultural folklore in
their everyday lives in class presentations or on a quiz or test.
