SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS
The Joel Gordon Honor Scholar benefits a junior or senior HOD major who is interested in health care industry careers, with special consideration given to an entrepreneurial venture. The scholarship can either fund a special internship project or can go toward course tuition.
The Scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in the HOD 4950-4953 internship in the Nashville area healthcare industry.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
The following are required for the Joel Gordon Honor Scholarship:
Completed a Need-Based Assistance application with the Vanderbilt University Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships;
Recommendation Form from your academic advisor or a fulltime HOD/LPO faculty member with knowledge of your performance & abilities. Form is available on the internship website: http://peabody.vanderbilt.edu/hod/internship/index.htm;
Completed Joel Gordon Honor Scholarship Application submitted to the Internship Office on or before the published deadline date;
Copy of a transcript of your grades; and
Typewritten Internship Proposal (see back side for details).

INTERNSHIP PROPOSAL
Your personal statement of why you wish to be considered for the Joel Gordon Honor Scholarship is a very important part of the application and is read with great care. Please attach your type written proposal. The statement should include:
I. Introduction
Provide a brief statement of your internship opportunity.
II. Academic Interests
Describe the factors that have led to your internship decision and the educational opportunities offered by this experience.
III. Project Plan
Be as specific as possible in describing the organization where you wish to do your internship. Detail the tasks and activities that you will be performing. What are potential senior project ideas?
IV. Meeting Educational Goals
Experience has shown that students are more likely to have a successful internship when their goals are in line with the activities, needs, and goals of the sponsoring organization. During the Internship, you will be required to set your learning objectives. The first step toward establishing your objectives is determining your goals. Discuss your learning goals and how your internship opportunity will allow you to meet them.
EXAMPLES OF PAST SCHOOLARSHIPS AWARDED
The following describes types of internship experiences of previous Joel Gordon Honor Scholarship recipients:
·  Designing a virtual web-based tour for an urban, women’s health and birthing center
·  Making changes in the educational program for the Department of Anesthesia regarding central venous catheters
·  Business development plans for a healthcare organization
·  Health Coaching Initiative to strengthen ties between Vanderbilt University, Meharry Medical College and the North Nashville Community.
·  Developing a nurse staffing acuity tool for the Pediatric Critical Care Unit at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
