WRITTEN CALCULATIONS – LIFE WITHOUT A CALCULATOR
Led byLiz Hills– Primary Maths Specialist and SLE
Course Description
With the recent introduction of the SATs arithmetic paper, the abolishment of the SATs calculator paper at the end of key stage two and the changes to the National Curriculum for mathematics, the importance of written calculations in primary schools has been heightened and there is now an even greater need for children to develop efficient written methods for calculating accurately. This course will examine the development of written calculation strategies across the primary phase, as set out in the National Curriculum Programmes of Study, and how consistency in the approach to the teaching of written calculations can be achieved through the implementation of a robust calculations policy. There will be opportunities to examine how specific teaching of misconceptions can help support and develop children’s understanding of written calculation strategies and how children’s depth of understanding can be assessed without the need for pages of ‘sums’.
Course Outcomes
  • To extend teachers’ understanding of the development in written calculations and when to use written calculations.
  • To support teachers to ensure a consistent approach to the teaching of written calculations.
  • To raise awareness of misconceptions in children’s understanding of written calculations.
  • To identify ways in which the depth of children’s understanding can be assessed.
