A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Adron Doran.
With deepest respect and appreciation, we pay homage and tribute to Adron Doran, our friend and colleague, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.
WHEREAS, Adron Doran was born on September 1, 1909, a native of Graves County, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on November 22, 2001; and
WHEREAS, Adron Doran was the devoted husband of Mignon McClain Doran, and together they shared 70 years of a loving and binding partnership that was filled with inspiration and success; and he was the loving uncle of a niece, Troy Burgess of Morehead, and two nephews, Dr. George Wyatt of Union and Joe McClain of Paris; and
WHEREAS, Adron Doran earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees at Murray State University and his Ed.D. degree from the University of Kentucky; he served as principal, coach, and teacher of three rural high schools in West Kentucky for 15 years, and his accomplishments as an educator exemplified his professionalism in the classroom; and
WHEREAS, Adron Doran was a great educator; he became president of Morehead State University in 1954, and during his 23-year tenure, he brought the former state college to university status and oversaw a building program that changed the skyline of the Rowan County town that gave its name to the school; his administration saw an enrollment of approximately 700 students in 1954 to nearly 7,700 upon his retirement in 1977; and
WHEREAS, Adron Doran served as president of the Kentucky Education Association; he was president of the First District Education Association and the Eastern Kentucky Education Association, and he represented both districts as a member of the Kentucky Education Association Board of Directors; he was editor of the Fulton Daily Leader from 1947-48; a member of the Kentucky Civil War Centennial Commission, 1958; and he was a member of the Eastern Kentucky Regional Planning and Development Commission from 1959-62; and
WHEREAS, Adron Doran's awards included the Lincoln Key Award, given by the Kentucky Education Association; the Lincoln Foundation for "integration at Morehead State University without incident or fanfare;" he was named "Kentuckian of the Year" in 1959 by the Kentucky Press Association, and he was the recipient of the Horatio Alger Award in 1971; he was named to the University of Kentucky Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 1965; he also was the recipient of the first annual award given by the University chapter of Phi Delta Kappa as an Outstanding Leader in Education, 1971; a Special Achievement Award for Community Service given by the Morehead Lions Club, 1975; Merit Award presented by the American Legion as Outstanding Citizen, 1976; Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contributions to agriculture in Kentucky, presented by Kentucky Livestock Improvement Association in 1975, and the Special Service Award by the Ohio Valley Conference, 1977; he received Morehead State University's Founders Day Award in 1996, and an endowed faculty chair in educational leadership was established by alumni and former colleagues to mark his 90th birthday in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Adron Doran was elected to the House of Representatives in 1944, 1946, and 1950, serving his constituents from Graves County with pride and distinction; he was elected by his peers in 1950 and 1951 as Speaker where he conscientiously guided his fellow legislators through the perils of the legislative process; and
WHEREAS, the passing of Adron Doran has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Adron Doran, our friend and colleague, and extends to his family and many friends its most heartfelt sympathy.
Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Adron Doran.
Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Mignon McClain Doran, 111 Woodland Avenue, Unit 808, Lexington, Kentucky 40502.
