Course Description: The course is designed to introduce participants to the essential elements of Personalized Learning and the Educational Elements Framework and develop expertise using Canvas Learning Management System as a student.

Prerequisites: KPBSD certified teachers and administrators.

Course Methods of Delivery: The content, activities, and interactions for this course are facilitated through a blend of collaborative, face-to-face group work sessions at each school site (EE training) and asynchronous learning activities in Canvas. Workshops will occur during in-service and faculty meeting times. The instructor will make the course available prior to the first week of class to allow participants time to familiarize themselves with the use of Canvas and accessing materials.

Course Pacing: During semester 2, 2018, teachers will participate in a variety of workshops and discussions relevant to Education Elements training and personalized learning work in their school. All assignments are due no later than May 4, 2018.

Technology Equipment and Skill Requirements: In order to be successful in this class, participants will need to have the equipment and technical skills listed below:

  • A word processing program on either a PC or Mac computer for creating written documents. Other necessary programs are available free and can be downloaded from the Canvas sign-in page.
  • The ability to use email, send and receive email attachments, use windows, browse a hard drive for documents, work in a web environment (e.g., opening links, using browser buttons, etc.); opening, saving, modifying and printing files; and downloading software plug-ins.
  • Access to Skype for Business with sound and video capability is optional but can be helpful.

Students will be introduced to the ISTE code of ethics and the role of the teacher as instructional leader. The ethical elements of working in classrooms will be introduced, and students will be evaluated on such professional elements as interactions with parents, punctuality, reliability, demeanor and clear communication.

Commitment to Diversity:Students enrolled in this course will develop knowledge regarding culturally competent pedagogical practices, and skills in using culturally sensitive and responsive instructional assessment strategies and materials that promote multiculturalism, and promote the role of art in diverse cultures including Alaska Native Arts.

Commitment to Technology-Students enrolled in this course are expected to plan and design effective learning environments/experiences supported by technology and through the use of various materials to facilitate creative experiences and expression using a variety of strategies

Instructional Goals: Introduction to Personalized Learning will enhance knowledge of blended and personalized learning through simulation and design thinking.

Student Outcomes: Participants will, with the partnership, expertise and guidance of the Education Elements will:

1)Reflect on best instructional practices as they apply to personalized learning – the core four: Integrated Digital Content, Targeted Instruction, Student Reflection and Ownership and Data Driven Decisions.

2)Recognize essential elements to redesigning education for personalized learning

3)Engage in collaborative activities that will develop understanding of a personalized learning environment through flexible, anytime, anywhere learning

4)Design classroom environments to support components of personalized learning.

5)Explore the changing role of the teacher in a personalized learning environment

6)Create authentic student centered learning opportunities through simulation, and design thinking models

After completing this course, participants will have access to

Class Participation: Participants are expected to participate in all face to face on site Education Element trainings and complete the asynchronous assignments that will be found in Canvas.

Course Requirements: Full participation in site based training sessions and completion of performance tasks and online discussions in Canvas.

Grading Scale/Evaluation Tools:

A = 90 – 100% B = 80-89% C= 70 – 90% D = 60-69% F= 0 – 59%

Assessment will be based on the performance tasks and discussion reflections developed through the coursework.

Class Atmosphere and Safety: The participants in this class are entitled to a safe learning environment. Participants must agree to accept difference of opinion without ridicule.
