Mission of Academic Advising at Phoenix College

The mission of academic advising is to further the learning philosophy of the college by
providing quality, accessible advising to all students.

Academic Advising is closed on all college holidays, the Thursday and Friday of Spring Break and from December 24 – January 1.

Contacting an Academic Advisor

Appointments: Available after 12:00 noon. Call 602-285-7777 or visit the One Stop Welcome Center in the Hannelly Center to make an appointment. Appointments are best if you have lots of questions, need an educational plan, or want to see a specific academic advisor.

Walk-in: Availablein the mornings until 11:30. Demand for walk-ins is high; wait times can be long, so please plan accordingly. Walk-ins should be used for quick, general questions that are time-sensitive.

On-line chat/e-mail: available during regular advising hours at and e-mail should be used for quick, general questions.

Tip: Advising is available all year.See an advisor early for the most attention and shortest wait times. Try to avoid seeking advising during “peak times,” when wait-times can be several hours. (“Peak times” for advising are, in January, the week before school starts and the first week of classes and from mid-July through the first week of the fall semester).

Responsibilities in a Student/Advisor Partnership

Student Responsibilities:

Attend regular appointments and make regular e-mail and/or phone contact with your advisor each semester.

Come prepared to each appointment with questions or material (i.e., checksheet, educational plan)for discussion, as well as a pen and paper to make notes.

Be an active learner by participating fully in the advising experience, asking questions and addressing specific concerns.

Complete all “to dos” or recommendations from your advisor.

Clarify values and goals. Provide your advisor with accurate information regarding your interests and abilities.

Become knowledgeable about college programs, policies, and procedures through the use of the PC website (phoenixcollege.edu)

Learn to use the class search, course registration, and other features ofMy.Maricopa

Take responsibility for your academic decisions. Remember: Advisors advise but students decide!

Advisor Responsibilities:

Provide academic support to ensure successful progression to graduation.

Explain academic policies and procedures.

Assist in understanding the benefits of higher education.

Assist in exploring academic options.

Encourage and support development of the skills necessary to attain educational goals

Guide decision-making and responsible development of educational plans for achievement.

Discuss preferred work environment characteristics and their appeal.

Encourage consideration of possible career fields based on choice of major, values and other strong areas of interest.

Assist in identifying college resources for finding opportunities for work and volunteer experiences.

Teach the value of classroom knowledge as it relates to future work tasks, habits and attitudes.

Provide information and strategies for using college resources and services.

Monitor and accurately document progress towards degree/certificate completion

Be accessible during office hours, by telephone, or e-mail for advising.

Advisement Learning Goals

Meeting with an academic advisor in an opportunity to learn about Phoenix College, your education, your goals, and yourself. As with any course you take, academic advising has goals for your learning. Your advisor can assist you with any of these goals.

As a student, you should know:

1. Your advisor’s contact information

2. What program of study you are following

3. What courses are required for your degree or certificate and the required/recommended course sequence

4. The estimated completion date for your degree or certificate

5. The college rules and procedures as outlined in the catalog (

As a student, you should know how to:

1. Read and understand the components of your checksheet

2. Build and adjust an academic plan that fits your needs

3. Use your my.maricopa.edu account

4. Search the online course list (Find-a-Class) and build a semester schedule

5. Search the PC website and online catalog for information

Long term, you should understand:

1. The purpose of specific courses and how they are interrelated

2. How your courses apply to your educational and career goals

3. The process of transferring to a university (admission, deadlines, pre-requisites, etc.), if that is your goal.

Important Dates and Things to Do

New Students: Attend a Bear Trax Orientation. Sessions available starting March 18, 2015.

Spring 2015 (January 17 – May 15)

  • Apply for Summer 2015 Financial Aid by the priority deadline: April 1
  • Prepare and submit your 2015-2016 FAFSA (fafsa.ed.gov)!
  • Get an educational plan – know what classes you need to take, and when. See Hannelly Center Welcome Center or call 602-285-7777 to make an academic advising appointment.
  • Registerfor Summer and Fall classes. Priority registration for continuing students begins March 9.
  • If you are a first-generation college student planning on transferring to a university, apply to participate in the REACH/TRiO program (Hannelly Center, lower level, #19)
