Schwa Project Requirements Assignments due

Presentations are

From the following lists, choose two assignments to complete, but you cannot choose two assignments from the same category. The assignments are worth 50 points each (content mastery), and the presentation of one project is worth 40 points (for class work).

Project Choices

Drama:

®  Rewrite a section of the story as a radio play/for reader's theater. There should be lines for a narrator plus a few speakers/characters. There should be more dialogue between characters than there are narrator lines. Include directions for any sound effects, gestures, etc.

®  Create a movie trailer video for your novel. The video should include a summary of the story and a minimum of two important "teasers" from the book.

®  Play the part of a character (using/making a mask) and explain the story from that character's point of view (you will turn in your "speech" when assignments are due, but you should memorize the presentation).

®  Role play being a t.v. reporter reporting a scene from the book as if it were happening live. (You will need to turn in the script to me but memorize the script for your presentation.)

®  Choose a scene from the novel and do a dramatic presentation of the scene (oral interpretation). You should read with appropriate emotion and PRACTICE your scene.

Art:

Create a story map to show the parts of the plot. Include at least two pictures. You should also include the primary conflict and resolution of the book. This should be no bigger than a quarter of a piece of (large) posterboard.

Create a scrapbook of significant items for one character

Create a collage that conveys impressions from the novel. Should be no larger than half a piece of (large) posterboard, and it should include the title and author of the novel.

Create a movie poster (no larger than a full piece of posterboard, minimum of a half piece) complete with the novel title, the movie guidance rating and why (for example: PG for language, etc.), real actors who would portray the characters, and a "tag line" or teaser to get viewers to the theaters.

Produce a comic strip based on the novel. The strip should be a minimum of 10 frames with color, dialogue balloons, and the major events of the novel.

Produce a diorama showing the setting or an important scene from the novel.

Time Capsule: Decorate a shoebox in a way that corresponds to your book—be sure the title of the book, the author, and your name are on the box. Place 5 key items inside the box. These items should represent some aspect of the book—characters, themes, events, settings. Provide a paragraph (5 sentences) explanation for each item in the box that details how the item relates to an aspect of the book.

Music:

¯  Write and perform an original song that tells the story of the book.

¯  Perform a musical piece that expresses the mood of one section of your novel.

¯  Create a music video using scenes from the novel.

¯  See me if you have another idea involving music and your novel.

¯  Create a soundtrack of 8 songs for the novel. Include a three-five sentence explanation for the inclusion of each song. Songs must somehow relate to the book; you cannot simply include a song because you like it. Burn a CD of the music if you can.

Writing:

!  Keep a journal/diary from the point of view of one character. The diary should include a minimum of 5 entries.

!  Write a newspaper article based on an incident from the novel.

!  Write a letter to the Language Arts Department recommending or discouraging the use of your novel in the Language Arts 8 curriculum.

!  Write an obituary for a character. Include lifetime accomplishments and important information from that character's life.

!  Write a letter to a character or the author.

!  What happens to the characters in 20 years? Write about one of the character's lives 20 years after the ending of the novel.

!  Write a “Where I’m From” poem from the point of view of one of the characters.

Presentations:

Presentations will be graded on two main criteria: 1) content and 2) delivery.

Content should include a summary of the story, the title and author of the book, and an explanation of one of your projects/visual aids. You will be graded on how you deliver your presentation, as well. Delivery includes organization, preparation, eye contact, and self-control.

Suggestions

þ  Get a folder specifically for keeping your "working drafts" and notes on your novel

þ  Write test questions as you go. Any notes you keep while you read will cut down on your work (and stress!) as the due date approaches.

þ  Set personal deadlines for

·  each of your two choices

·  typing any of your work

·  collecting materials

·  assembling your projects

·  REHEARSING YOUR PRESENTATION

þ  DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!!!!
