Open Mic – Community Related

Darleen Horton announced that Cane Run's science scores were up in testing.

She also thanked the companies that had interactive exhibits at the recent Pioneer Days.

Open Mic – Plant Related

Brad Karas, ASRC, said yesterday a public hearing was held for retubing the gas boiler. The plant will spend $800,000 to replace worn-out tubes. There will be no environmental impact. Brad said the plant has hired 10 employees: seven operations and three crafts. And he added that if anyone noticed large cranes, they are there to work on the new solvent plant, due to start up in April.

Martha Gammons asked whose railcars were involved in the derailment near south Dixie Highway. Jana Zigrye said an empty car not involved was Dow's. Bill Fisher said DuPont sent a support group because they are familiar with hydrogen fluoride. Joe Wagner asked if it's normal to let a car burn like the butadiene car did for about two days. Yes, it's safer that way. Brad said ASRC also sent employees in support because of the butadiene. Freddie George explained that Lake Dreamland sent its hazmat trailer and team. They made some 200 entries into the hazardous zone.

Peter Raymond, Momentive, said the plant is waiting for a construction permit for a thermal oxidizer. Momentive started up its wastewater treatment plant in September and is sampling. Also, it is in talks with APCD regarding modifications on an existing scrubber. The plant is waiting for its Title V Permit.

Plant Presentation

Lubrizol presented earlier in the year and nothing has changed. Consensus of RCAC members seemed to be that we don't need a presenting company every month. Note: Let's try one presentation per quarter.

Budget

Tom Herman presented spending figures for 2012 and the proposed budget for 2013. He pointed out that although the budget is flat, we have one fewer participating company with the departure of MSD. He developed the budget as if MSD were still a member. The budget was approved as presented.

Subcommittee Meetings

Dan Introduced the agenda for each committee plus the Charlie Hunton Award selection committee.

Membership Committee (Gordon, Anne, Earl, Phil, Jeff, Joe)

Gordon Welker presented the group's activities, which included declining Roxana Trivitt's resignation. She'll instead be kept on the meeting distribution list in hope she'll return someday. They suggest we do the same with inactive members -- Debra Koons, Ed White, and Shakaa Zulu -- after sending them reinvitation letters. Dan said he has lost contacts with Shakaa and Gordon said he and perhaps others will visit SOCKS and speak with him. The committee wants to define membership requirements.

The committee recommended sending meeting notices to members of the Cane Run Area Business Association. Action: Dan Hicks will follow up.

Committee members will contact and recommend a president elect.

Freddie George, Lake Dreamland fire chief, was presented and accepted for membership.

Programs Committee

See attached programs schedule.

Projects Committee (Jana, Joyce, Rich S., Alice, Jean, Peter)

For a special project, the committee recommended we participate in Habitat for Humanity, assisting or partnering with Shively Area Ministries. Action: Jean will keep us informed.

Better use of Wally -- SAM Back to School Bash; area schools (along with other program elements like fire safety). Action: Alice and Jana will meet to review details.

Martha suggested making a video of Wally and send it to schools and TV stations. It could be put on a continuous loop for community events.

Announcements/Adjournment

Dan Hicks announced that next month's meeting would be our annual December appreciation dinner at the Holiday Inn in Shively.

The meeting adjourned at 7:40.
