Program Description
LECOM Bradenton’s Medical Science Academy (MSA) offers high school students (11th & 12th grade & recent graduates) a two-week summer program in which they will experience an academic medical school environment by participating in small group instructions, hands-on laboratory experiments, and clinical shadowing experience. Forty MSA students will be active participants in a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) modality in which groups of students (8) and a facilitator will utilize a case presentation format. The MSA students will explore selected medical concepts, and the medical science data that supports those concepts. The laboratory experiences are designed to expose the MSA students to hands-on practical clinical skills, such as splinting, suturing, and vital sign measurements. At the graduation program, the MSA students will participate in a group presentation of the clinical case. Support materials for the case presentation will be gained through anatomy/physiology lectures, PBL case discussions and the use of the students’ borrowed copy of an anatomy/physiology textbook. Throughout the first week, information will be presented on health career opportunities in medical field and how students can prepare for those careers academically. During the second week, MSA students will shadow health care professionals in their actual working and teaching environments. The overall academy program is consistent with activities designed for training primary care practitioners.
Description of Activities
PBL Cases
MSA students (~40) will be divided into five PBL groups consisting of 8 students and two OMS II facilitator. Each PBL group will be given one of five different cases with a common chief complaint. The OMS II facilitator will utilize standard PBL discovery and interactive procedures. PBL groups will have four days to determine the diagnosis and to explore the basic medical sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc.) associated with the case. They will have two hours on the last day of the week to prepare a grand rounds type presentation of the case, which will be delivered during the graduation program. Students will use the library resources (software, models and textbooks) to prepare their PowerPoint presentation for graduation.
Lunch/Free Time
The LECOM Bradenton cafeteria will provide the students with a box lunch and snacks. Students may bring their own lunch and snacks, which are to be stored in a designated MSA section in the cafeteria. No food or drink is allowed in rooms outside of the cafeteria. Students are free to have their lunch out on the patio tables.
PBL Cases and Chief Complaint
Alex Sinelnikov, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the MSA program, and Kersten Schroeder, Ph.D., Director of Community Outreach, select five PBL cases that contain a common chief complaint. The patient’s subjective and objective data however, vary between the five cases. All cases have a patient’s history and physical data followed by a Complete Blood Count, Lab Chemistry values, and Urine test results. Additional tests may include an ECG, X-rays or MRI. All cases are framed from the primary care perspective.

OMM / Dr. Quinn / Learn about the history of Osteopathy as it is applied to the health of the muscular-skeletal system in general and more specifically to the heart & lungs. Observe and perform some osteopathic manipulation techniques with a focus on the primary care perspective.
Dental Exam / Dr. Fabre / Learn how to perform a dental exam measure vital and understand what constitutes good dental hygiene.
Suturing / Dr. Danahy / Learn about different suturing materials and techniques. Practice different suturing techniques using a knot tying board.
Splinting / Dr. Ferretti / Learn how to properly immobilize a limb using different splint and soft cast materials.
Casting & Athletic Wrapping / Dr. Quinn / Learn how to stabilize an ankle and wrist using athletic wrapping techniques. Learn how to use fiberglass casting materials to set broken bones.
Mental Health / Dr. Clark / Learn about community health support systems and how to administer a mental health assessment questionnaire.
Shadowing Experiential
MSA students will be divided into 2-person teams. Teams will rotate each day to one of four different experiential sites. Team members will be assigned a morning session or afternoon session during which time they will shadow a health care professionals as they go about their medical/health related rounds. Team members should arrive at the site by 9:00 am for the morning session and by 1:00 pm for the afternoon session. Lunch will be on your own.
MSA Graduation Program
The five PBL teams will present the finding of their PBL case to the whole MSA class. Each individual PBL team members should have a part in the presentation. Additionally, students will be asked to comment on the experiential experiences. All students will be requested to fill out a survey questionnaire evaluating the MSA program. Certificate of participation in the MSA program will be awarded.
