WERKERSDAG OPE: 1 MEI 2008
(Manie Bekker)
Winter is now upon us and this time of the year has unique challenges for those die-hard anglers that are not put-off by the cold. We were privileged to have a mild day at the club comp at Kruger’s and some anglers caught decent bags for this time of the year. We look forward to the week-end comp at Allemanskraal Dam on the 7th and 8th June – bring plenty of warm stuff – die Vrystaat is koud in die winter.
Who is in the news?
Congratulations to Hernus Bekker who has once again been selected for the Junior Protea team - well done you lift the WDL name up high.
We also congratulate the following members who have been taken up in the Central North West provincial teams:
A-team
Manie Bekker and Morne Nel who ended first and second respectively after the three provincial trials.
B-team
Gerhard Marx and Pieter Greyling.
C-team
Nic and Neil Nortje.
Masters
Jan vd Merwe, Joggie Gundlach, Nic Nortje and Jan Oberholzer.
Club comp – May 2008
May’s club comp took us to a new venue namely Kruger’s Farm near Oranjeville. The anglers met just before the bridge at 06:30 and once the formalities were completed travelled the approximate 10 km to the venue. This is a promising venue with an angling bank of 7km which includes various options of shallow water to deeper water thus allowing one to target different species. The competition was well attended for this time of the year with 25 anglers participating. A total of 354 fish comprising mostly of grass carp were caught on the day. A positive sign was that where the grass carp were generally small during previous seasons, they now carried some weight and a couple of good specimens were caught including a 3.14 kg by Hernus Bekker and a 2.1 kg by Gerald van Delen. The senior winner for the day was Pieter “Has Been” Greyling who comprehensively beat the other anglers with a bag of 46 fish, almost 20 more fish than the second placed bag of 27 fish. Welcome back Pieter.
The ladies division was won by Petro Bekker with a bag of 26 fish which would have given her a 4th place in the seniors. Hernus Bekker once again showed his metal by winning the junior division with a bag of 19 fish. Penkop newcomer Christophel Greyling won his division with 6 fish – will he follow in dad’s footsteps?
Credit must be given to the committee who ensured that the weigh-in and subsequent prize-giving was conducted at a high standard.
May winners –Gerald, Emile, Petro, Hernus, Pieter and Christophel
Members Catches – May 2008
Hernus – Grass Carp 3.14kg Gerald – Grass Carp 2.1kg

WERKERSDAG OPE: 1 MEI 2008
(Manie Bekker)
Die dag was egter n reuse sukses.
1. Hein De Kock - R2500,00 - 4,685 kg
2. Pierre Cloete - R1500,00 - 3,940 kg
3. Moemf Redelinghuys - R1000,00 - 3,315 kg
Julle ouens is bak!

Top Tip No 2
Preparation
The success of any angling outing is directly proportional to the amount of preparation that goes into the trip. Here are a couple of pointers that may assist you in catching more fish.
Bait
Ensure that the following basic baits are within your arsenal:
- At least two doughs
- Variety of pips
- Variety of floaties
- Fresh dry feed
- Worms
- Two different backings
- Dips and ball dips
Tackle
Traces:
- At least 20 new traces (second hand traces break and the hooks are blunt)
- A combination of Bottom and Rietvlei traces
Rods and Reels:
- Have sufficient line with leaders
- Reels are clean
- Rods are clean and guides smooth
List
Make a list that can be permanently placed at a convenient place to ensure that on every outing there is nothing that is overlooked. Include non angling items such as raincoat, umbrella, sunblock, food, water, hat etc. Some outings will not necessitate all the items on the list, but at least it serves as a memory jogger.
Other
Let somebody know where you are going and notify them on your arrival.
Get sufficient rest the night before by starting your preparation three days before the outing and avoid the last minute rush – you will forget something.
Attempt to pack the vehicle and fill it with fuel the night before so that there is no rush in the morning.
Speak to others that know the venue to obtain pointers (best spot, baits, distance, traces etc).
Enjoy the outing and respect the Creator for the opportunity.

The Final Word
We are privileged to be part of such a wonderful club with committed anglers and committee members. Any angling club needs funding to co-exist – please pay your subs – it comes back to you in one form or another.
Our condolences go to our chairman, Jan Oberholzer, who tragically lost family members in a recent accident.
