Research Interests: Functional and applied genomics aimed at improving stress and disease resistance in fruit trees. Emphasis is on fire blight disease of apple. Specific objectives include using genomic tools to characterize the global response of apple to fire blight disease and to identify molecular markers for fire blight resistance; developing basic knowledge of host-pathogen interactions in order to characterize the underlying basis for resistance and susceptibility in fruit trees; developing management strategies for fire blight based upon the use of resistance, cultural practices, growth regulators and natural compounds; and the genetic engineering of apple for enhanced resistance to abiotic and biotic stress.

Recent Accomplishments:

·  Characterize transcriptome of apple to fire blight disease by SSH, cDNA-AFLP and microarray (Norelli et al. 2009, Baldo et al. 2010, Bocsanczy, in prep; respectively)

·  Worked with a team of plant breeders, plant pathologists and horticulturalists to develop size-controlling apple rootstocks that are resistant to abiotic and biotic stress, including fire blight disease (see Publications: Norelli et al. 2003 Plant Disease 87:26-32).

·  Developed efficient transformation protocols for apple cultivars of economic importance including McIntosh, Gala, and M.26 rootstock, and studied the stability and expression of transgenes in transgenic apple.

·  Developed a management strategy for successfully using the plant growth regulator prohexadione-calcium (Phd-Ca) to increase fire blight resistance in young apple trees without excessive vegetative growth reduction (see Norelli and Miller 2004 Plant Disease 88:1099-1106).
