Art 1

…is a one-semester, introductory course where students are working with various media and laying a foundation of concepts, vocabulary and Art History that are required to move on in the Art program. Students will be able to define the elements of Art and recognize some famous artists and their works. They will learn drawing techniques, design and color theory. The course features sculpture, painting, chalk pastel, and other media. Students will practice discussing and writing about artwork. A minimum grade of “C” is required to enroll in Art II.

Studio Policy

Art is both academic and vocational. Because it is a studio class, students are expected to behave as professional, working artists each day. In addition to following school policies, I expect students to: work quietly all period, care for tools, supplies and materials, and clean up their own areas thoroughly. Work ethic and personal responsibility are as important as mastering content. PLEASE NOTE: Nothing is allowed on the desk surface except for art materials during class. Space is provided to store belongings safely in the classroom. Specifically, these are not permitted:

v  Food, drink, candy or electronic devices (water is allowed)

v  Unprofessional language, including profanity, obscenity or bullying

v  Images considered inappropriate by community standards. Art work will adhere to school appropriate content and may be censored at the discretion of the instructor.

v  Inappropriate attire. Dress code must be followed as described in the handbook.

Grading

Grades are weighted by category, with projects having the largest percentage as they take the majority of class time. Projects will be assessed according to criteria that are given in the instructions. Every student’s goal is to improve their skills from wherever they started. Please keep in mind that a positive, willing attitude is the major factor in determining your success; if you stay organized and put forth your best effort, you can do well. Homework is assigned every week and will not be accepted late.

v  Homework 10%

v  Quizzes 15%

v  Class work 20%

v  9 weeks test 15%

v  Projects 40%

Supply list for Intro to Art Supplies due on ______

Bring this checklist and all of your supplies by the due date for a quiz grade of 100 points. Each item on the list is worth points – you must have all 8 for full credit. Each day late will deduct 10 points from your grade. All students must have their own supplies to continue in class. All other materials will be supplied by the instructor. See me if there is an issue with obtaining supplies and we will make arrangements.

Please bring one of each:

o  Sketchbook that is spiral bound, not glued, and has at least 50 sheets of white paper (not newsprint). Size: either 8 x 10 or 8.5 x 11, no larger. Top spiral is best! Hardbound ok too.

Write your name on the front of your sketchbook with permanent marker please. 20 points

o  Set of graphite drawing pencils. See below for details. 20 points

o  Set of colored pencils, any brand. 10 points

o  Hand-held pencil sharpener that contains the shavings. 10 points

o  White vinyl eraser. 10 points

o  A selection of 3-5 small, bristle brushes. 10 points

o  Roll of duct tape, any color or pattern (you will use it for your own project). 10 points

o  Pocket folder, any color. 10 points

o  Extra credit: bring in a box of tissue for 10 extra points

Optional: felt tip markers or pens if you like to use them for drawing.

Graphite drawing pencils come in sets with a variety of density. They are graded from 10H to 10B with an HB pencil in the middle. Read the package carefully – you need an assortment of 5 or more pencils, some H and some B. Many stores offer sets with pencils, erasers, sharpener and blending stick all included. These are a better deal than buying each item separately.

The sketchbook will serve as a notebook for the class. You will use it nearly every day and must have it with you. Due to the amount of use it gets, the book must be spiral bound or it will fall apart quickly. There are storage bins in the classroom for materials that will not fit a book larger than 8.5” x 11”. You may take it home to complete homework assignments but you must remember to bring it back daily.

Where to buy these supplies:

Dollar Stores are great for the last 6 items. They may not have drawing pencils or sketchbooks.

Walmart carries all items. Art supplies are found in aisle I-25.

Michaels offers the Artists Loft brand of economical art materials. They often have sales of 40% off sketchbooks, and you can get coupons online.

A.C. Moore also has a complete selection of art supplies. They also offer daily coupons.
