Volunteers Needed for Growing Partners Project

Introduction

The Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) will partner with the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA) in organizing a summer learning programme for a group of Form one students studying in Kwun Tong district.

We are recruiting 10 student volunteers to plan and lead the training activities of this summer programme.

About the Programme

This Summer Learning Programme is an innovative and intensive programme organized for 60 Form one students studying in schools of Kwun Tong district. As Kwun Tong is a district with a high concentration of young people from low-income families, BGCA will organize a wide range of learning activities to enhance the social exposure, self understanding and confidence of participants. It is hoped that the participants could be empowered to widen their social network and horizons whereas the HKU student volunteers would engage in active learning byserving these needy children.

The Summer Learning Programme includes activities such as a 4-day-3-night summer learning camp, intensive drama workshops and some social exposure activities, etc.

Responsibilities:

  1. To assist in planning and implementation of the Summer Learning Programme
  2. To participate in a 4-day-3-night summer learning camp
  3. To participate in a 10-day summer learning programme to

i)use innovative methods, such as drama, to teach English for students in poverty;

ii)assist the Project Officer to deliver social exposure activities

  1. To coordinate the program planning with different working parties
  2. To facilitate the communication and relationship building among students

Number of HKU student volunteers wanted:

  1. 8 students as core membersfor the planning, coordination and implementation of the whole programme
  2. 2 students as camera-men and reporters to video-tape the activities of the programme and to conduct interviews with the participants

Requirements

  1. Good communication and relating skills with teenagers;
  2. High enthusiasm and commitment in serving the underprivileged youngsters in the community;
  3. Good planning and leadership skills. Relevant experience is preferred but not a must; and
  4. Students of any year of study (non-local students are welcome)

Training provided:briefing and training sessions would be provided to all volunteers

Salary: the work is on a voluntary basis, thus, no salary will be provided but commutingand meal allowance would be offered

Working Period:15 July - 16 August 2009

Working district: mainly in Yau Tong and Pokfulam

Working schedule: full-time for 5 days per week.
