THE STRAWBS ARE COMING TO ST. ANN'S ON SATURDAY, MAY 14TH! Admittedly for some reading this, that may raise a few questions. Who are The Strawbs? Why should I care about The Strawbs? (See below!)Does anybody else care about The Strawbs? (Yes -literally millions of record buyers over the last 40 years!)What have they ever accomplished? We have answers to these questions! The Strawbs began life as The Strawberry Hill Boys, but the name proved too long and was shortened to The Strawbs. Their music also evolved from bluegrass and folk to folk-rock and eventually progressive rock. Rolling Stone magazine hascompared them favorably to other progressive rock bands like YES, KING CRIMSON, and THE MOODY BLUES.Founding member Dave Cousins attracted attention for his skill as a guitarist, and when American folkartists came to tour in England, Dave was called upon to provide back-up, playing with Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Arlo Guthrie, and The Clancy Brothers. This probably helped The Strawbs become the first British band to be signed to Herb Alpert's A & M Records. Around this time, the very talented keyboard player Rick Wakeman joined the band, playing on three albums before joining YES. He was replaced by Blue Weaver, who later went on to a very successful career with The Bee Gees. Around this time, The Strawbs entered their most commercially successful period, with basically the members who will be appearing at St. Ann's. Theyplaced 7 consecutive albums in the Billboard charts. The album "Hero & Heroine," which the band will perform on this tour in its entirety, stayed on the US charts for over four months. In June of 2015 Rolling Stone called "Hero & Heroine" "one of the 50 greatest progressive rockalbums of all time." Interestingly enough, the band's front man and main composer, Dave Cousins, a Catholic, composed a song in the 70s - a time of great unrest in England and Ireland - entitled "The Hangman and The Papist"which takes a sympathetic look at ayoung man being martyred for his Catholic faith during the Protestant Reformation, while simultaneously making a strong plea for an end to sectarian violence. This will be a fabulous show featuring great musicianship, melodic songs, harmonious vocals, and a chance to hear "oneof the 50 greatest progressive rock albums of all time" played by the musicians who recorded it - all right here at St. Ann's! Doors open at 6:30pm. Tickets can be purchased at the rectory (cash only please) $30 for adults in advance, $33 day of the show: ages 13-17 $5.00 and 12 & under Free. You may also reserve tickets on splatterconcerts.com.

Religious Vocations –In today’s gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that the father will send the Holy Spirit, who will remind them of all that He told them. Through that same Spirit, many are called to participate in Jesus’ work in a variety of ways as priests, deacons, religious brothers and religious sisters. Sometimes this call can seem very clear and direct; at other times it can be more subtle. If you’ve ever thought that God might be prompting you to consider a religious vocation, contact please call or write Father Norman Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations at 573-3113 or .
