What To Expect
When Your Child Has An MRI
What is an MRI?
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a powerful magnet, computer and radio waves to obtain detailed pictures of the organs and structures inside your child’s body. It is a painless test frequently used to diagnose brain and nervous system disorders, cancer and musculoskeletal (bones, muscles and joints) conditions. There is no radiation exposure with an MRI examination.
Your appointment:
- Arrive at your scheduled registration time to complete paperwork.
- Bring a bottle, toys, books, etc. to help distract your child and put him/her at ease.
If sedation is required (typically under age 6-8):
- If your child requires sedation, it is extremely important to not allow your child to eat or drink before the test. Please be sure to ask your healthcare provider how long fasting is required. The test cannot be completed if you do not follow this direction.
- A pediatric anesthesiologist will insert an IV catheter to administer sedation. The doctor must explain the risks of sedation before the procedure. At California Pacific, pediatric anesthesiologists usually give Propofol, a very safe, effective medication. Your child will breathe on his/her own throughout the procedure and wake up shortly afterwards without nausea, vomiting or chills.
The MRI test:
- Your child will lie flat on a small table that moves through a “doughnut” shaped cylinder.
- An MRI is noninvasive – there are no needle sticks, pain or discomfort – but it can be loud. Earplugs will be provided.
- A brain MRI takes about 45 minutes to complete. Your child must stay still during this time, but will be able to adjust between sequences. There are several sequences with varying times.
- You may stay in the room while your child has the procedure. Please remember that because the MRI works through magnets, NO METAL is allowed in the room. This includes keys, cell phones, change, belts, pace makers, etc. Any metal will disrupt the imaging process and will result in a blurry picture.
Test results:
- When the test is completed you may return home to your usual activities. We may have a preliminary result within 48 to 72 hours. In such case we will notify you. In some other cases your MRI study requires a more comprehensive review and consultations among several neuroradiologist which could take up a week in non-emergency cases. We do appreciate your understanding
