The 2016/2017 Spinal Network Travel Grants

AspartoftheSpinal Network’sremittofacilitatecommunicationandcollaboration,thesegrantsareintended to helpdefraythecostof attendingconferences.Thetravelgrantsareopento emergingresearchers, clinicians,postgraduatestudents,peoplewitha spinalcordinjuryandpeopleworkingin thespinal cord injury community.ApplicantsmustbebasedatamemberorganisationoftheSpinalNetwork.

Forconferencetravelinthefinancialyear2016/2017therearegrantsofuptoAUD1000forindividualsattending conferenceswithinAustraliaandNewZealand,andonegrantofuptoAUD2000foranindividualpresentingat aninternationalconference.

RosalindE. Nicholsonwasonly17whenshesustainedaspinalcordinjuryinahorseridingaccident. Sherefusedtobeoverwhelmedbyherinjuryandbecameanactivememberofthelocalcommunity. RosalindgainedartsandeconomicsdegreesfromtheUniversityofNewEngland,andbecamean accountantandfinancialadviser.Shetutoredhighschoolstudentsinmathematics,visitedthesickin hospital,andwasaspokeswomanfortheYearoftheDisabledin1981.Sadly,Rosalinddiedin2006 butherlegacyliveson.WethanktheNicholsonfamilymostsincerelyfortheirgenerosity.

Eligibility

Tobeeligible,youmust:

•Beapersonwithaspinalcordinjuryorworkinginthespinal cord injury community,oranearlycareer researcher,clinician,orMSc/PhDstudentinvolvedinspinal cord injury research.

•Foraresearcher,clinician,studentorpersonworkinginthespinal cord injury communityyoumustbebased atanorganisationthatisamemberoftheSpinalNetwork.Please visit

•Beliving,workingorstudyinginAustraliaorNewZealand.

•Bethefirstandpresentingauthorofatalkorposterattheconferenceifyouarearesearcher, clinicianorstudent.

Applicationprocedure

ApplicationsareopenfromFriday22 July 2016andcloseonFriday14 October 2016forconferences between1July2016and30June2017.Lateapplicationswillnotbeaccepted.Send Applications to

Thefollowingshouldbeincludedinyourapplication:

•Thename,dateandvenueoftheconference.

•Theestimatedcostofyourattendanceattheconference,itemisingtravel,accommodationand registrationcostsandincludingcopiesofinvoicesorreceiptsofitemsalreadypaid.

•Detailsofotherfinancialassistanceforattendanceattheconferenceyouhaveobtainedor appliedfor.

•Acopyofyourabstract.

•Alaysummaryoftheresearchyouwillpresentandwhyitisimportant(500–800words).

•Alistofyourpublications(ifappropriate).

•Inadditionstudentsmustprovideacoveringletter,co-signedbyyoursupervisor,indicating youreligibility.

Notificationprocedure

NotificationwillbeinOctober.TheSpinalNetworkwilllookfavourablyuponthoseapplicants whohavebeenabletomakeastrongcaseforattendingtheconferenceandobtainatleastmatching travelfundsfromothersources.Werecognisethismaynotbethecaseforpeoplewitha spinal cord injury however we do encouragepeoplewitha spinal cord injury toconsiderattendingaconference.

SuccessfulapplicantsmustacknowledgetheSpinalNetworkintheirpresentation andwillberequiredtowritea500-600wordarticlefortheeNewsletteroutliningthe conferenceandhowyouhavebenefitedfromattending.Youmayalsoberequiredtopresent yourresearchataSpinalNetworkmeeting.
