Social Media campaign aims to galvanize increased registration among African Americans by showcasingunsung champions for organ and tissue donation

(INSERT City, State DATELINE HERE)—[Local OPO/AGENCY] is joining forces with the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) to spread a viral message of action, awareness, and cultural pride throughout February in commemoration of Black History Month. The hashtag for this year’s toolkit is #AMATBlackHistoryMonth.

This social media campaign, themed Unsung Heroes, creates a much-needed platform for showcasing African American change agents whose support of the #DonateLife mission is translating into increased community engagement and advocacy in the African American community. During the month of February, #DonateLife organizations have a unique opportunity to recognize the stellar and steadfast community of industry partners, influencers, and supporters who are advancing the collective effort to increase the number of registered African American organ and tissue donors.

“AMAT was launched with the mission of empowering multicultural professionals working in the organ, eye, and tissue donation and transplantation industry, and this year’s social media campaign pays homage to the countless African American Donate Life champions whose efforts allow us to do our best work,” said Maria Veve, president of AMAT. “As we relish in the growing number of African Americans who are answering the call of becoming registered organ, eye, and tissue donors, it is imperative that we take time out to salute the unsung heroes whose efforts are being realized with more lives saved and healed.”

Featured Unsung Heroes profiles include:

- Alfarena Ballew, MBA, the first African American coroner/medical examiner in the state of Indiana, supporter of the Indiana Donor Network

-Liver recipient and faith influencer, Rev. James C. Burton, volunteer with Gift of Life in the greater Philadelphia area

-Donor sister and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Tracie Potts, volunteer with LifeBanc in Northeast Ohio
