Vocabulary 11

“Mom,” I called, “can I please go to the mail box?” “Sure honey,” she replied, “just don’t go near the highway.” Our house is on the corner of our neighborhood street and the highway. My mom is always telling me to stay away from the highway—like I would dare dash out into that busy road and wait to get smacked by a car or attacked by criminals. I am eight years old now—plenty old enough to know how to stay out of the road! It astonishes me that she still feels the need to remind me of such.

I slammed the door and started toward the mailbox. I took a shortcut through the front yard. I was ambling along, when suddenly, I saw the tip of an arrow head. It was partially hidden under some weeds. I was so excited. I dug out the arrow head and put it in my pocket. I couldn’t wait to take it to school and show it to my history teacher. She was a very pleasant teacher, and I just knew she would be astonished by the arrow head.

I smiled as I continued to the mailbox. When I finally got there, I opened the box and took out a bundle of mail. I quickly glanced through it, and guess what I found? A letter addressed to me. It was in a cool purple envelope with a neat stamp on it. I tore into it right away. It was an invitation to a karaoke party! The invitation said there was going to be a stage there and everyone would get to take turns being the star. It also said there would be plenty of pizza, cake and ice cream for all of the guests. I was so excited!

The night of the party finally arrived, and I was nervous! Can you believe it? I actually had butterflies. I arrived at the party, fixed my plate, and sipped on a Coke, and then finally they called my name to be the star. As I took the stage, I thought I might vomit, but I kept on going. I took the microphone, and the music started. I looked out into the darkness and sang my heart out. All the guests erupted in applause. I guess I was the biggest star of all.
