Cumberland County MCC
Centenary Two day Trial
Newbiggin farm
23rd & 24TH June
Report by Derek Wilson
Ben’s Wet Wet Wet
Last weekend Cumberland County held its Centenary Two Day trial at Newbiggin farm near Brampton. All I can think of at the moment is the 90’s band Wet Wet Wet, and what a weekend is was!! The weather conditions before the trial had been very wet and various changes had to be made to the sections and the route on the Friday, these changes had to be changed again on Saturday morning due to prolonged rain over Friday night and Saturday morning. With a full entry and riders coming from as far away as the Isle Of Mull, the club was determined to make the best of difficult conditions. The revised course on Saturday comprised of 12 sections over two laps with a One o’clock start. The last section is always a man made affair located in the start field, and with extra wet conditions this section kept the riders concentration levels going to the endcards. At the end of the first Day, Steve Dixon and his little Whithawk was top of the results on two marks lost. Saturday night was B & B night (Barbeque and Beer) in the marquee on the camp field, with many discussions on the weather and what was going to happen on Sunday.
After steady rain throughout Saturday evening, the Sunday route had to be changed again from the previous day’s changes!! With a slight delayed start time riders enjoyed three laps of fourteen sections over an eight mile lap. The first three sections all set in Dixie’s wood behind the start field got harder as the trial progressed.
Section number seven at the top of Newbiggin beck was the only real beck section for the day due to the wet weather changes, observed by club treasurer Alan Stewart gave riders a chance to wash their wheels before the long ride out to the Coombes. At the end of the weekend Ben Butterworth topped the leader board with a total of 6 marks lost riding his tidy Cub, closely followed by Steve Dixon a mark behind on 7.
A special thank you to Brian Dixon and family for letting us run the trialin difficult weather. The observers who proved fantastic for withstanding the elements, and of course all the riders for understanding the clubs difficulties in putting on hopefully enjoyable event.
The club would also like to thank Frankie Dixon, Charley Dixon, Clarry Smith, George Stobbart,
John Thirlwell, andCraig Ridley for the use of this fantastic piece of land.
The Camping raised £310.00 which will be made up to £400.00 by the club to give each of the following
Charities £100.00 Hospice at Home, Eden Valley Hospice, Penrith Air Ambulance and Cumrew Church
