InternInDFW to help students and small businesses
AUSTIN, Texas – August 13, 2012 – College recruiting is dominated by large employers. This means students may miss out on the near 70% of the jobs recently added to the economy by the small businesses, startups, and nonprofits in the Metroplex. This also means small businesses don’t have the same access to student talent for internships and entry-level positions. That’s why over 30 agencies, chambers, and organizations, 12 colleges and universities, the Governor's office and campus2careers have come together to connect area students and local employers for internships all year through a new program called InternInDFW.
The Dallas Regional Chamber is one of the 30+ community partners helping to spearhead InternInDFW. “A program like this is important to our members and our community” says Angela Farley, VP of Education for the Dallas Regional Chamber. “Our small businesses are looking for ways to connect with students, the future of our workforce and a competitive advantage for many employers. Through InternInDFW, we hope students will get exposure to working in a small business and employers get a lower cost, educated resource to help them grow their business.”
Schools like UTA, SMU, UNT, ITT-Tech, and more are participating in InternInDFW as well. Career Centers are sharing program information with their students and recommending they pursue an internship in the Fall. “One of our goals at the Hegi Family Career Center is to get students thinking about internships earlier in their education” says Lisa Tran, Assistant Director of Career Services at SMU. “By connecting with local small businesses, students can intern all year and develop the skills and network they need to get a job when they graduate. Employers are increasingly hiring for experience over major or GPA, so it’s important for us to help our students gain experience outside the classroom through internships. We look forward to a growing partnership between SMU and campus2careers with InternInDFW.”
The InternInDFW program includes a website (www.InternInDFW.org) with best practice tools and templates to help employers develop an effective, annual internship program and a fair each semester to connect small businesses, startups, and nonprofits in the region with area students all year. The Fall InternInDFW fair will be Tuesday Sept 4th from 6:00-9:00PM at the Omni Park West. campus2careers, the host of the program, will also be conducting a free Internship Workshop for employers on Monday, August 13th, from 2:30-4:00PM at Dallas City Hall (Conference Center).
