JULY 2016

Hello and welcome to the July edition of the magazine.

I am sure many of you are planning your summer holidays and I hope you will have a great time. Before you go you could have a good day out at the Stickney Show on the 16th July, where we hope there will be something for everyone to enjoy without it costing a fortune. Our fund raising Race Night was enjoyed by everyone who came.

If you are new to the village we hope you will soon settle in and enjoy living in our community. You will find important information inside the magazine and useful phone numbers are on the back.

ST LUKE’S CHURCH

Most of us enjoy a sense of achievement from time to time, a sense of satisfaction when a job has been tackled and we can see a difference from the start to the finishing point. So thank you to those who came to help tidy our Churchyard. There's more to be done but your efforts have made it look better, and thank you to those who swept the path for the concert evening.

RESULTS:

The Diocesan Ladies Choir performed superbly, creating wonderful sound to permeate St. Luke's Church. The raffle and refreshments raised £114.00 for Cluster Funds.

A further £75.00 for our Church Cluster was raised from the Squares Competition organised by Bev Gosling and Angela Brady. Prize winners were Irene Gale (New Leake), Gladys King (Eastville) and Natalie Piper (Stickney).

Revd. Fran's Sponsored walk money has totalled over £500.00, so far, for our Church Cluster, her sore feet have recovered!

StLuke's received a marvellous £397.70 from the second May Bank Holiday bingo. There were few spaces left in the Youth Centre and people were generous with their support.

The Church has also contributed to two charities recently. £260.00 has been sent to Christian Aid after the May coffee morning and collection of coppers and silver and £50.00 for the Shelter Box appeal which provides emergency homes for families who have fled from conflict and natural disaster. The Deanery took up this appeal and donations will continue to be passed on.

EVENTS TO COME:

GIFT DAY for St. Luke's will be on SATURDAY02JULY with coffee, tea, squash etc. from 10.00am until about 1.00pm in the Church. Letters and envelopes will have been delivered beforehand and we hope you will support the upkeep of your Churchas generously as in previous years. Also around midday our enthusiastic CYCLISTS will be arriving as they make their way from Nottingham to Skegness raising money for Cancer Research UK. Stickney Church is their main stopping point for refreshment, filling water bottles etc. We will also present the money raised from the prize bingo on 18 June.

How about coming along to the GARDEN FETE in the Rectory Garden, Horbling Lane on SUNDAY 31 JULY? Games, competitions, stalls and refreshments will be available. The morning service will be in St. Jude's, New Leake, at 10.00am and all are welcome. Then we will "scamper" back to make pots of tea and plate up ploughman's lunches to start the fun sometime after 12 noon.If you don't make the service then do come along during the afternoonbringing family and friends.

When you receive this news booklet the outcome of the EU Referendum may only just be known. We recognise the strong feelings it has evoked and the diversity of opinion. As God's Church we pray for acceptance of the result and wisdom to move forward together working for the good of allpeople.

Gardening Tips for July

July is the height of Summer (unfortunately not as I write!). Days are long and temperatures are probably at their peak. This is the month when you're harvesting something delicious from your garden every day. July can be dry, so keep an eye on the watering. Problems caused by any prolonged interruption of the water supply, include flowers falling, fruits failing to form, skins splitting, premature bolting and diseases such as tomato blossom end rot. When you do water, try to spread a mulch to help conserve the moisture, his will also keep down weeds.

Here then are a few jobs to be getting on with in order to prolong the harvesting period:

1} Keep an eye on the tomatoes. Feed them regularly, I'm running an experiment by feeding half my tomatoes with 'Easy-Feed Sticks' which provide a season-long feed from just one feed, and feeding

the other half with the conventional moisture feed.

Another job is pinching out the side shoots, which

incidentally, can be encouraged to develop roots by

placing them in a small jar of water and then in

compost when they develop roots.

2} Continue to regularly lift beetroot before they grow too large, remember it is not too late to sow more seeds if you want a continuous crop right into autumn.

3} Second early potatoes should be ready to lift this month. As soon as the flowers appear, scrape away some of the soil (or dig down with your hands into the container if you are growing them in pots) and take a look.

4} You may be lucky to be in a position to pick some early runner beans, though

after our late cold spring (a green winter?) they may be late this year. Don't leave any you do get too long or they get stringy. The first runner beans of the year are undoubtedly the best.

5} Keep an eye on the courgettes which can turn from an undersized specimen to a marrow sized whopper almost overnight. It is best to cut them when they are small and tasty so inspect them regularly and harvest often.

In conclusion a word of caution from the good lord (Byron, that is!) who wrote:

"The English winter - ending in July”

Stickney Outdoor Bowls Club

Stickney Outdoor Bowls Club needs new members. There have been bowlers in the village since 1929, what a shame it would be if we have to close the club. There are more people living in the village now, children, from the age of 12 years, are very welcome to join and play for fun or as part of a team. The green is open from until early September for your enjoyment. For more information please contact: MRS S HUTTON - 01790 752996 or MR H WRAGG - 01205 481221
