Introduction:

The U.S.-Pakistan Partnership for Agricultural Market Development (AMD) is a USAID funded project which aims to improve the ability of Pakistan’s commercial agriculture and livestock sectors to compete in international and national markets in the four target product lines; meat, high value and off season vegetables, mangoes and citrus. AMD will act as a catalyst for development and investment in target product lines by actively promoting cooperation and coordination amongst the value chain actors and ancillary service providers. AMD’s implementation strategy is underpinned by a strictly commercial and market driven approach with a clear focus on strengthening market access for its partner organizations, and support international marketing and sales efforts. The objective of the AMD project is to encourage investments in the four target product lines through matching grants and technical assistance, and empower stakeholders by developing synergies among them to accomplish together what they cannot do alone. AMD will support upgrading, streamline supply chains, provide technical assistance to optimize profit margins, increase participation of women entrepreneurs, and ultimately help make Pakistani meat, high value and off season vegetables, mangoes and citrus become more profitable and competitive.

In line with the overarching goal of AMD and the marketing strategy developed, participation in trade shows and other marketing events is a key element of the Project’s international marketing strategy. AMD will work towards facilitating participation of partner businesses at leading trade exhibitions and marketing events. The Project’s support will include targeted technical assistance for preparatory work prior to each show, facilitation for B2B interactions at the event itself and subsequent support for follow-up upon conclusion of the same.

Background:

In order to enhance sales and promote exports of target product lines, AMD will focus on facilitating agribusinesses for participation in leading international trade fairs and exhibitions. These events hold the potential to be one of the most effective platforms for marketing and promotion for agribusinesses and provide an ideal opportunity to network with various buyers, sellers and other players from the allied industry, resulting in the development of lasting business relationships and sustainable exports through adequate buyer follow-up.

Gulfood, in recent years, has emerged as a leading international event for the agriculture produce industry. Celebrating its 22nd edition in 2017, the expo attracted over 5,000 exhibitors and 95,000 trade visitors from more than 120 countries in.

Continuing its participation in the expo in 2018 will allow AMD to build on the success of previous years by continuing to facilitate partner exporters to promote Pakistani exports and establish personal trust and strategic business partnerships, a prerequisite when dealing successfully in perishable products such as fresh fruit, vegetables and meat.

The Program:

AMD will collaborate with Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) for participation at the Gulfood 2018 fair. The project will acquire a dedicated 9 sqm booth at the trade show and will utilize the space as a trade facilitation counter, adequately resourced to direct visitors to relevant exporting businesses while actively scheduling and managing appointments with prospective buyers at the event.

AMD will bear all costs relating to fabrication, design and printing of promotional material for the allocated booth. In addition to the booth, AMD will setup a dedicated investment and trade facilitation center at the expo venue. The trade and investment facilitation center is envisioned to be an area where facilitated exporters from Pakistan will be able to hold multiple one on one meetings at one time with perspective buyers in privacy. Due to the success of the center at last year’s Gulfood and request by TDAP, the center will be accessible to all Pakistani exhibiting firms (relating to the target product lines) this year as well. Building on the success of previous years, AMD will also organize a dinner to showcase and raise awareness of Pakistan as a Halal hub for these products. Two AMD staff members will travel in advance of the team and facilitated exporters for setup for Gulfood and for meetings with vendors and officials at the Pakistani consulate for the branding dinner.

AMD will advertise to assist companies in attending the Gulfood and will invite proposals from companies based on the criteria laid out below. Only those companies will be supported which have the potential or should already be focusing on exporting meat, citrus and HV&OSV products.

AMD will bear the cost of lodging and local transportation where needed (excluding international airfare) for up to twelve (12) agribusiness/exporters: meat (4), HV&OSV (4) and citrus (4).

The selected companies will be responsible for their marketing and display materials, international airfare and daily expenses in Dubai.
