Timothy Wang and Ariel Hsing Earn US National Table Tennis Titles

Las Vegas, Nevada – The 2010 US National Table Tennis Championships concluded Saturday in Las Vegas with Timothy Wang (Houston, Texas) and Ariel Hsing (San Jose, Calif.) each earning US National Table Tennis Singles crowns. Wang defeated Peter Li (Lauren, Md.) in straight games in the men’s final, 11-4, 11-2, 11-6, 11-4, and 15-year-old Hsing defeated 14-year-old Lily Zhang (Palo Alto, Calif.) in a marathon women’s championship match, 11-7, 11-7, 10-12, 11-13, 11-4, 2-11, 11-9.

No.10 seeded Wang earned his way into the quarterfinals with a minor upset over No.7 Han Xiao in seven games. Wang’s victory over Xiao also marked the beginning of a three-match streak of seven game victories leading Wang into the final. Wang defeated Adam Hugh in the quarterfinals and US National Team member Mark Hazinski in the semifinals to earn his spot in the final with Li. However, Wang didn’t need all seven games to defeat Li in the final where he recorded his first straight-game victory of the tournament.

Hsing and Zhang competed in a classic back-and-forth championship match for the women’s singles title. After four games the players were knotted up at two games apiece. They then traded lopsided victories before Hsing came out on top in the decisive seventh game, 11-9. Hsing earned her spot in the final with victories over Judy Hugh and Diane Chen in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

Defending women’s champion Jun Gao pulled out of her quarterfinal match due to flu-like symptoms.

The five-day event hosted 743 of the country’s best table tennis players and crowned national champions in singles, doubles and mixed doubles as well as served as a selection tournament for the US Junior and Cadet National Teams.
