PD1 Elementary Jazz Techniques for Classical Musicians

Description:Ideas on how to start a beginning jazz band, teach swing style and improvisation andinspire youngjazz musicians. We willreview methods, music and teaching techniques that make teaching jazz band great fun and easy for teachers who do not play jazz.Participants are encouraged to bring instruments.
Bio: Peggy Rakas has been teaching elementary band for more than 30 years in North Merrick and Copiague, NY and Norton, Ohio, and has presented workshops in Positive Teaching Techniques for Nassau NYSCAME and for the Balanced Mind Conference. She has been a guest conductor for the Rockland County Music Educators Association, the East Meadow District Band, and was the guest conductor for the 2014 Balanced Mind Elementary Band Reading Session. She has served as a Vice President and chairperson for the Nassau Music Educators Association.

Description:This lab-style session will provide practical, hands-on repairs for stringed instruments. Everyday shop procedures and preventive maintenance techniques will be demonstrated and performed by the participants. The workshop will stress maintenance tips and shop methods for dealing the problems common with each instrument.
Bio:Charles Ruffinohas been immersed in the art of the violin since 1974. His apprenticeship at the Newark School of Violin Making in England included periods of study at the great London workshops of J&A Beare, and W.E. Hill & Sons.

Description:Navigating the Percussion Section of the NYSSMA Manual – Rudiment, Scale, & Tuning Interpretation and Solo Selection
This workshop will help educators to interpret and teach the various technical requirements for snare drum, mallets, timpani, and multiple percussion as they appear in the NYSSMA manual.
Bio:Dr. Dylan Benson is a music teacher in the Sachem School District. A recording artist and active percussionist NYSSMA All State Adjudicator, he earned the DMA in Percussion Performance from the University at Stony Brook in 2008.

For our time together to be productive, bring a single lesson plan with them that does not integrate other content areas.
Bio: Stephen Guarino is the Coordinator for Performing and Fine Arts for the Brentwood School District.He a graduate of the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, N.Y., and holds a Master’s Degree from the University at Stony Brook and an Advanced Certificate in Educational Administration from Dowling College.

Bio: Carl J Ferrara has been an Music Educator for more than 23 years. He currently teaches at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in Amityville, NY. He is a NYSSMA vocal adjudicator and has served as a Chairperson for the SCMEA All-County Chorus for the past six years.

Bio: Reynard Burns is an educator, composer, conductor and clinician. During his thirty-four years as orchestra director in the Bay Shore Schools, his groups won awards at the county, state and national level. Since retiring from Bay Shore in 2002, he has devoted much of his time to composing and presenting workshops and clinics at various national, state, and local conferences as well as in schools.

Description: This session provides an update on the National Core Arts Standards and their adaptation in New York State. Basic processes, anchor standards, and other elements will be reviewed. Participants will receive the latest update concerning New York's process for adapting these new standards.
Bio:Marc Greene is an adjunct faculty member at Ithaca College with considerable past experience as a public school music teacher and administrator.
He is currently the president-elect of the Eastern Division of the National Association for Music Education, President of the New York State Council of Education Associations, and Past-President of the New York State School MusicAssociation.
