Music Theory I, Mr. Gastle
Course Goals & Outline
While enrolled in the Iroquois Music Theory Program, students will:
· Develop comprehensive knowledge of the mechanics of music as a notational language
· Develop necessary listening skills in aural training for music element recognition
· Learn terms and concepts related to music notation
· Recognize and create written functions of elements in music
· Develop compositional techniques including those from several periods and styles of music.
· Apply aesthetic and technical judgments to music and its performance.

Units 1-6: Staff, Notes, Pitches, Clefs, Ledger Lines, Measure, Bar Lines, Time Signature, Rests,
(Q1) Dots, Ties, Slurs, Repeats Signs, Endings, Dynamic Signs, Tempo Markings, Articulation, Codas, Flats, Sharps, Naturals, Whole Steps, Half Steps, Enharmonic Tones, Ear Training.
Units 7-12: Tetrachords, Sharp Scales, Flat Scales, Key Signatures, Chromatic Scales, Intervals, Circle
(Q2) of Fifths, Intervals, Solfege, Transposition, Alla Breve, Complex Time Signatures, Triplets, Syncopation, Triads, Scale Degree Names, Dominant 7th Chords, Ear Training.
Units 13-18: Triad Inversions, Dominant Seventh Chord Inversions, Figured Bass, Major Chord
(Q3) Progressions, Minor Scales, Minor Triads, Augmented & Diminished Triads, Primary Chords, Modes related to Major & Minor, Harmonization, Composition, Arpeggios, Accompaniments, Passing & Neighboring Tones, 12 bar Blues, Blues Scale, Motive & Phrase, Forms in music, Ear Training.

Expectations
· Students will be on time and prepared.
· Students will report to each class with workbook, folder, & pencil and completed assignments.
· Students will be considerate, respectful, and responsible for their conduct and actions.
· Students will be involved in the learning process and participate in class.
· Students will inform teacher of known impending absences and show teacher completed assignments BEFORE date of absence, will make up missed tests in a timely fashion.
Grading Policy
Quarterly grade is determined by the average of these three categories:
TESTS : 40 % Written and Aural
QUIZZES: 20% 5 Quizzes @ 20 pts each.
HOMEWORK: 20% Workbook Assignments averaged to a test grade
PARTICIPATION: 20% Effort, Input, General Work Ethic and Behavior
