What is the SGA Senate?

The SGA Senate at UHCL is an elected group of 25 students (3 Undergraduates and 2 Graduates from each college, and 3 undergraduates and 2 graduates from the Council of Organizations) to represent academia within the university, as well as the betterment of Student Government Association. The SGA Senate meets monthly during the Spring and Fall semesters.

The four primary purposes of the SGA are:

  • To be advocates for and speak on behalf the student body atlarge
  • To provide input to university administration on student and organizationalissues
  • To appoint/elect students to universitycommittees
  • To allocate university funds to studentorganizations

3 Undergraduates and 2 Graduates from the College of Science and Engineering

Application Deadline:

Return completed applications to the Student Life Office (SSCB 1.204) no later than 1:00 p.m. on WednesdayFebruary 28th, 2018.

Special Note: Before submitting an application, all applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss the duties and expectations with the SGA E.C.and with the SGA Advisor. We want to ensure that candidates understand the basic mission and goals of the SGA and of the Senate and what is required of the senators. These expectations include:

  • The candidate’s availability for meetings
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and staff
  • Participation in all SGA Senatemeetings
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students
  • Ability to survey students on needs

Elections:

Week of March 27th- April 2nd, 2018 via email (Survey Monkey)

All candidates are expected to attend the election meeting, make a brief presentation about why you think you are the best candidate, and answer questions that SGA Representatives may have.

Term of Office:

Should unexpected vacancies occur to where a special election must take, elected candidates must agree to fulfill their Senator duties from the day of installation until the end of their term. Installation will be set up by the SGA advisor and Executive Council members.

You are eligible to apply

  • If you are currently enrolled atUHCL
  • Plan to be enrolled at UHCL through spring2019
  • Have a strong desire to serve your campus community while enhancing your personal and professionaldevelopment.
  • Prior involvement in SGA, student organizations, or other co-curricular activities (at UHCL or other colleges or universities) is helpful but is notrequired.

Minimum requirements include:

  • Be enrolled in a course of study at UHCL throughout the term of office; no minimum number of hours isrequired.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 orhigher.
In addition:
  • SGA Senators are expected to work together as ateam.
  • SGA Senators are expected to attend and participate in all leadershipdevelopment workshops and retreats asscheduled.
  • SGA Senators are expected to become familiar with university policies, issues,and activities.

As listed in the Constitution and By-laws of the Student Government Association, the following are the duties of the Student Government Senators:

The duties of the College Senators shall be to:

  1. Survey students about Academic needs/issues
  2. Act as a liaison between students and the respective college
  3. Meet with respective college faculty
  4. Host a SGA table or town hall at least twice each long semester
  5. Solicit for Committee Representatives
  6. Attend all SGA Senate meetings

Minimum time commitment: 10-15 hours per month (time required varies depending on campus events and issues)

The duties of the Council of Organizations Senators shall be to:

  1. Survey student organization students about needs/issues
  2. Report Senate meetings back to Council of Organizations
  3. Act as a liaison between Senate and student organization
  4. Host a SGA table or town hall at least twice each long semester
  5. Solicit for Committee Representatives
  6. Attend all SGA Senate meetings

Minimum time commitment: 10-15 hours per month (time required varies depending on campus events and issues)

In addition to the duties as outlined above, there are other responsibilities and expectations of all Senators not outlined which must be carried out including, but not limited, to attendance and participation in regularly-scheduled planning and developmental meetings and retreats. These meetings and retreats may be held on weekends, depending upon the class, work and family commitments of the Senators and E.C. Members.
