SYO Organisers Manual Page 1

  1. Introduction

The Organiser is one of three main officials appointed by the Club or Region to stage an event.

The others are the Planner and Controller. BOF Rule 4 (2003) lays down the duties of the Organiser, Planner and Controller. It is usual for them to be appointed at the same time, normally several months before the event. They must be full members of BOF.

These notes are intended to describe the various aspects of organising an orienteering event and are concerned mainly with the role of the organiser.

Anyone involved in running an orienteering event is recommended to read the BOF Rules & Guidelines. These are available on the BOF website ( or may be purchased from the BOFoffice.

Whilst these concern primarily the Planner and Controller, the Organiser should read the following as background:

Rule 1 - General

Rule 1.6 / Appendix F - Environmental Good Practice

Rule 1.7 / Appendix E - Safety

The Organiser should consult the event Controller if they wish to see a copy of the rules or require clarification on any point.

Another major role these days is the SI manager. The SI manager is a new role for any club and at the moment Martin Ward has that role in SYO. Tel. 0114 220 9553. email: . At SI events he co-ordinates the input of data before and during the event and looks after the downloading of dibbers. He also looks after the SI equipment. He will manage his own team.

The following sections describe the role of the Organiser and the issues that the Organiser will need to consider with each of the helper squads. They do refer to SI management but only where this affects the role of the organiser.

ACKNOWLEDEMENT

I was inspired to update the SYO Guidance after seeing BOK’s “Organiser’s Manual” and have borrowed their format and some of their words. The BOK manual was produced by the hard work of Tricia Walker and Ashley Cooper
