South Carolina Women in Higher Education

Dear College / University President / Chancellor / Dean:
South Carolina Women in Higher Education (SCWHE) invites you to nominate a qualified woman for the 2014 Martha Kime Piper Award. The award, named for the first woman president of a public higher education institution in the state, is given annually to recognize a woman with a record of advancing and supporting women in higher education and the education of women in South Carolina.
A committee of the Executive Board of South Carolina Women in Higher Education selects the Piper Award winner from among the nominees. The following criteria with percentage weights should be used in considering a nominee for the award.
1) The recipient must have a record of participation in and support for the activities of South Carolina Women in Higher Education (SCWHE). (35%)
2) The recipient must hold or have held a position in higher education in a South Carolina institution of higher education. (25%)
3) The recipient must have a record of advancing and supporting women in higher education and the education of women throughout the state of South Carolina. (20%)
4) The recipient must have achieved professional recognition for outstanding leadership and contributions to her institution or state. (20%)
Nominations should include:
a) A one-page letter of nomination describing how the nominee has fulfilled the criteria for selection with special emphasis on the nominee’s involvement in the S.C. Women in Higher Education
b) A current curriculum vitae
c) Two (2) letters of support.
Current members of the Executive Board of South Carolina Women in Higher Education are not eligible for nomination, nor may they make nominations. Former winners have included faculty members, administrators and presidents from a number of South Carolina institutions: Dr. Elizabeth Bell (USC Aiken), Dr. Joan Altekruse and Dr. Sue Rosser (USC Columbia), Dr. Sally Hare and Dr. Sally Horner (Coastal Carolina University), Dr. Mary Thornley (Trident Technical College), Dr. Ellen Wood Hall (Converse College), Dr. Sue Sommer-Kresse (College of Charleston), Dr. Anne McNutt (Technical College of the Lowcountry), Dr. Kathleen Noble (Aiken Technical College), Dr. Judith Prince (USC Upstate), Dr. Carolyn West and Dr. Kay McFarland (USC Columbia), Dr. Joann Boyd-Scotland (Denmark Technical College), Dr. Deidre Martin (USC Aiken), Dr. Susan Graham (Aiken Technical College), Dr. Dori Helms (Clemson University), Dr. Nancy T. Welch (Greenville Technical College), Dr. Caroline Whitson (Columbia College), Dr. Donna L. Richter, (USC Arnold School of Public Health), Dr. Jane Upshaw (USC Beaufort), Dr. Ann Bowles (Spartanburg Methodist College), and Dr. Christine Curtis (USC-Columbia).
The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 7, 2014. The award will be presented at the SCWHE annual conference on Thursday, February 27, 2014 in Columbia, SC.
