COURSE DESCRIPTION: Law Enforcement is an introductory course designed to provide students with an understanding of law enforcement principles and practices.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Through class meetings, assignments and exams, students should expect to do the following:

·  Learn the ethical and legal responsibilities;

·  Understand operation of police and emergency telecommunications;

·  Gain a fundamental understanding of courtroom testimony;

·  Compare and contrast basic policing functions and units;

·  Recognize basic responsibilities of patrol and traffic;

·  Understand crisis management and rights of citizens;

·  Apply the principles of investigation and evidence collection;

·  Become familiar with police discretion and behavior;

·  Examine hate crimes and domestic violence;

·  Become familiar with TABC laws and code;

·  Examine the concepts of crowd control and use of force;

·  Analyze the advances in policing and new technologies; and

·  Understand the NIMS system (National Incident Management System).

Prerequisite: Law Enforcement I

GENERAL PROCEDURES:

Course Requirements:

·  Prompt arrival for class each meeting. That means NO late arrivals. Class begins on time.

·  Any materials are due in class on the day stated

·  Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated.

·  Active, informed participation in class discussion and activities and intellectual engagement at all times.

·  Thorough reading of assigned text segments and supplementary materials.

GRADING CRITERIA:

Examinations 60%

Daily 40%

METHODS OF EVALUATION: Daily grades for daily assignments and worksheets.

End of unit assessments. Periodic Quizzes.

CLASSROOM RULES

EXPECTED CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE FOR STUDENTS

Tyler Independent School District is committed to promoting a level of classroom etiquette conducive to maximum teaching and learning. Within this context, the following etiquette is expected:

1.  Do not get out of your seat without permission!!!!!!!

2.  Attend class each time the class meets.

3.  Be on time for class. You are inconsiderate of your classmates if you arrive late.

4.  Refrain from talking while the teacher is lecturing. Idle chattering and giggling are disruptive to the class and disrespectful to your teacher and classmates. You may be subjected to discipline measures if you do so.

5.  DO NOT use your phone while instruction is being conducted. All phones will be put up and out of sight and you will only have them out when designated by the instructor.

6.  Bathroom policy will be followed… A student will refrain from going to the bathroom unless it is an absolute emergency and cannot wait until class ends. No one will go to the restroom the first or last 15 minutes of class.

7.  Be attentive and participate in class. Participation means answering questions when called upon and/or volunteering answers.

8.  CHEATING (in any form including plagiarism) will NOT be tolerated. If a student is caught cheating, they will receive a FAILING grade on the material and possibly face disciplinary action from the school.

9.  No headsets, CD players, radios, cell phones, etc. in the classroom.

10.  Remain civil toward one another at all times. We will discuss issues in this class that are sensitive and subject to debate – everyone is entitled to their own opinions and every opinion will be respected in this classroom.

11.  If you are not the teacher – do NOT open the door for other students lingering in hall.

12.  Do not stand at the door the last few minutes of class to wait for the bell to ring. Everyone will stay seated until the bell releases you.

Being disruptive of classroom activities will NOT be tolerated.

Being unreasonably loud in the classroom will NOT be tolerated.
