BRIEF SUMMARY OF

CLUBS AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

INTRODUCTION

This booklet is provided to give information concerning clubs, organizations, awards, and scholarships at MarionHigh School.

Due to the number of activities, we cannot list all of them. The organizations have different guidelines and it is your responsibility to find out what they are.

The organizations covered here are for the major groups. Other questions can be answered in the Parent-Student Handbook.

ANIME-MANGA CLUB (A) Ms. Cauble – C204

Founded: 2006. The Anime Club was organized to allow students to express themselves through the popular genre of Anime/Manga. Activities include guest speakers, critique of Anime videos, and entering local contests as individuals or groups. Membership is limited to 25 students, and dues are $5.00 per year. Meetings will be held in C205.

ART CLUB (B) Ms. B. Wilson/Mrs. K. Moseman-

Founded in l953. Purpose: To advance art training, to broaden interest, appreciation, and understanding of the Arts, and to participate in the functions of the school in which art can be used. The activities of Art Club include participation in competitive events in the area of fundraising projects and community service projects, homecoming parade, holiday window painting for businesses and schools, BCHS Art Fest (sand sculpture competition), annual MHS Art Show, and other art related field trips. Dues: $5.00 per year. Students will have the option of joining the State Affiliate for student artist’s (The Rembrandt Society). Additional dues are collected from members wishing to belong to this part of the organization.

COMPUTER CLUB (B) Mrs. Tonazzi- C105

Limited to 24 members. Contests, games, and advanced programs will challenge the members. Must have had one semester of computer class to be eligible. Dues : $5.00 per year.

FCA (FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES) (B) Mr. Martin/Mr. Tarlton- A103

Founded: 1996. FCA is an interdenominational Christian organization that has been in existence nationwide for over 40 years. FCA will give athletes a positive peer group structure to nurture Christian growth and service. As the purpose states, FCA is targeted at reaching athletes and coaches. In order to best reach this group, members should be current members of school athletic teams and those who carry an interest in athletics. Dues: $3.00 per year. Activities: School and community projects, college basketball and football games, FCA banquets and FCA summer camps.

FBLA (FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA) (B)Mrs. Barger/Mrs. D. Hudgens- cafeteria

Founded: 1951. FBLA is a national organization with a primary purpose of training high school students to become business leaders. FBLA offers many opportunities for its members to become effective leaders through participation in state, regional, and national levels.

The activities of FBLA include participation in the competitive events on the area, state, and national levels, fund raising projects to help finance trips to conferences, community service, and projects which help FBLA keep in touch with the business world. Any student who has had or is enrolled in a business course is eligible to join FBLA. Dues: $30.00 per year, include state & national dues, Southern Area Conference registration fee and FBLA t-shirt.

FFA (Future Farmers of America) (A) Mr. Griffith- F103

Founded: 1929. Purpose: The Marion FFA Chapter is a club for students enrolled in an Agriculture Class at MarionHigh School. The club participates in numerous local, sectional, state and national activities through the school year and summer. Activities include parliamentary procedure contest, public speaking contest, livestock judging, dairy judging, soil judging, forestry contest, State FFA Convention, National FFA Convention, as well as other activities. The club holds monthly business meetings. Dues: $13.00 per year.

FCCLA (FAMILY CAREER & COMMUNITY LEADERS OF AMERICA) (B) Mrs. Damron/Mrs. Walker-Gross/Ms. Kendra Cagle - F105

Founded: 1948. Purpose: To promote personal growth and leadership development through home economics education. Members develop skills for life through character development; creative and critical thinking; interpersonal communication; practical knowledge; and vocational preparation by students participating in local, sectional, regional (SIU) and state (Springfield) conferences and workshops. At MHS, FHA-HERO participates in Homecoming, "Share Your Blessings" at Christmas, various fund raisers to finance trips and conferences, and the annual Style Show. Students who have taken or are taking home economics classes may join. Dues: Vary year to year.

FRIENDS IN CHRIST (A) Mrs. D. Hudgens- cafeteria

Purpose: The purpose of the Friends in Christ Club is to allow the opportunity for Christians from all backgrounds to have fellowship and to discuss the Bible. Any student is eligible to join. Dues: $3.00 per year. Activities: Homecoming parade, visiting nursing homes and homeless shelter, See You at the Pole, National Day of Prayer.

FEA (FUTURE EDUCATORS OF AMERICA) (A) Lisa Clark – A108

Founded: 1993 and affiliated with the National Phi Delta Kappa Society. Purpose: Provide students with opportunities to explore teaching as a career, to gain a realistic understanding of the nature of education and the role of the teacher and to develop qualities and skills essential for successful teaching. Activities: Homecoming parade, American Education Week, classroom observations, guest speakers, visit the SIU Education Department, $250.00 Outstanding Senior Scholarship(if funds available). Dues: $5.00. Membership: Limited to 40 members.

GSA CLUB (A) Holly Eagelston – C115 Lab

The Gay-Straight Alliance Club is to create a fun and safe community for all students, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, background, ethnicity, and religion, and instills strong, positive values such as leadership, teamwork, and creativity that will develop students into positive role models. Activities include raising LGBT awareness, guest speakers, and offering support to troubled students. Club meets in C115 during A club time and after school every Wednesday until 4:30 PM. Dues are $3 with no current restriction on how many students can be members. Founded: 2016.

HOSA (HEALTH OCCUPATION STUDENT ASSOCIATION (B) Ms. Travelstead, Ms. Ross, Ms. Miller – A115

Founded 1991. Purpose: To assist students in learning about and preparing for a health occupation. Dues: $8.00 per year.

INTERACT CLUB (A ) Mr. Wimberly-

The Interact Club is a service club for high school students associated with the Rotary International Service Club. The Interact Club is aimed at developing leadership skills, personal integrity, respect for others, advance international understanding, and for members to demonstrate understanding for others. There will be two service activities per year. Those service activities may be for the school or the community. The club will have a faculty sponsor and a Rotary sponsor.

LATIN CLUB (A) Mrs. May- B202

Founded: 2005. The Latin Club of MHS is an organization for current Latin students and those who have completed two years of Latin coursework. Members are eligible to become members of the Latin Honor Society if they complete academic requirements. Latin Club meets with A Clubs. Clubs officers are elected from Latin III and Latin IV students. Dues: $10.00

LIBERAL YOUTH CLUB – (B) – Mr. Stephens – A111

Founded: 2016. A club intended to assemble peacefully and discuss issues inside of the school, the nation and world; making it a fair environment for those of any political affiliation. We aim to increase the education and understanding of politics, as well as involve students in upcoming local and national elections. Those who wish to belittle any person of any standing will not be permitted, as it is the organization’s intention to unify the student body, not cause dissent. Debates, lectures, guest speakers and regular meetings will be hosted and will meet in Mr. Stephens’ room (A111) until the organization’s population supersedes the space available. Dues: $5 per year.45268

LIBRARY CLUB (B) Mrs. Griffith-Library

Founded: 1995 with 6 members. Library club is an integral part of the workings of the MHS library. To be a member of library club you must be available to work in the library before or after school at least once a week. Failure to do this will result in dismissal from the club. In addition to working in the library, you will go to the local elementary schools and do book reads for the younger students. Dues: $5.00 per year.

MATH CLUB (A) Mr. Stephens- A111

Founded: 1958. Purpose: To increase interest in areas and applications of mathematics beyond topics covered in the student’s math classes. Problems, puzzles, and careers applying math in today’s world will be explored. Membership Requirements: Students enrolled in a math class with at least a B average in previous math classes may apply if they are interested in participating in math related activities and tutoring. Dues: $4.00 a year. Activities: Guest speakers, field trips, contests, Homecoming float, and fund raising.

NEWSPAPER & JOURNALISM (A & B) Mrs. S. Neal – A204

Newspaper and Journalism Club is designed for staff members to do a variety of reporting and production activities in the course of producing the school newspaper. Stories will be composed on a computer and then transferred to a page layout program. Students will also sell ads, design and produce ads, and handle the business requirements of dealing with advertisers. Students involved in journalism will write stories for the school newspaper, The Student.

There is no club fee, but there is limited enrollment. Priority will be given to students who have previously been on newspaper staff.

SkillsUSA (B) Mr. Elders/Mr. James/Mr. Pulliam – F-109

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. It was formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America). The club will compete in local, state and national competitions using skills developed in Construction and Automotive classes. Dues: $8.00 per year.

SPANISH CLUB (Los Amigos) (A) Mrs. Haynes – B201

Founded: 1941. Became a member of Illinois Federation of Pan-American Leagues 1951. The club celebrates the cultural and historical contributions of our Spanish speaking citizens and neighbors.

Members must be currently enrolled in Spanish or previously completed at least 2 years of Spanish. Activities include El dia de los muertos y Navidad celebrations with participation in the Share Your Blessings Program and caroling at the Veterans and MarionMemorialHospitals.

In the spring, members attend Foreign Language Day at SIUC and celebrate Cinco de mayo. Dues: $5.00 per year.

THINKING WILDCATS (A)Mr. Andrew Margherio- C205

Academic Achievement Bowl Team representing MarionHigh School in various contests around the area. Practices during club periods and matches at various times during the school year. Students are chosen based on recommendations from the faculty of academic strength.

TRANSISTOR TITANS (Robotics Team) (B) Mr. Wallace – C207

Founded: 2011. The Transistor Titans are a part of FIRST robotics (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST is a not-for-profit organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for science, engineering, technology, and math. It is a competition based program where team robots compete with and against other robots. The rules for the competitions are released in early September with competitions starting in December.

Meeting times will vary from a couple of hours a week to begin with then up to 15 hours a week (possibly more) once the build season begins. Typically we meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays with occasional Saturday building sessions.

Dues are $40.00. This will cover the cost of registering the team as well as team t-shirts. See Mr. Wallace for more details.

TRI-HI-Y(A)(Freshmen/Sophomore-J.Turner/A. Presley –A206) (Jr/Sr-Kendra Wofford - C104)

The Tri-Hi-Y was founded as part of a national movement that promoted Christian character through fostering speech, sportsmanship and scholastic achievement. In recent years, a focus on community service has become the prevailing theme of the organization. The purpose of the club is to help young women develop maturity, fellowship with peers and serve local charities. The proceeds of many fundraisers are donated back to the local community. Activities have typically included: participating in Homecoming activities, assisting in special school projects and volunteering with the CASA of Williamson County. Dues are $5 per year. Membership may be limited to the first 30 girls who pay dues.

YEARBOOK - "MEMORY KIT" (A and/or B club) –Mr. Nguyen

*Membership limited to current or previous members of Yearbook class. Members will edit photos, produce pages, proof layouts, sell and design business advertising, conduct interviews, write story copy, and maintain activity files. Members will work as a team to publish the Memory Kit.

YOUNG CONSERVATIVES (A Club) – Mrs. Robinson – C206

This club is founded on behalf of the founding fathers of the United States of America to preserve freedoms, rights, liberties, beliefs, and values of our great nation was based upon and to keep the conservative views alive among generations to come. Fees are $10. Space is limited to 50 members.

ORGANIZATIONS

FCCLA-CHILD CARE (Family Career & Community Leaders of America) (In Class)

Founded: 1979. Purpose: This chapter is organized within the vocational classroom. Activities and projects are planned and carried out primarily during class to relate to the occupational objectives of Child Care. Dues: $3.00 per year.

FCCLA-CLOTHING CAREERS (Family Career & Community Leaders of America) (In Class)

Founded: 1979. Purpose: This chapter is organized within the vocational classroom. Activities and projects are planned and carried out primarily during class to relate to the occupational objectives of Clothing Careers. Dues: $3.00.

FCCLA-FOOD SERVICE (Family Career & Community Leaders of America) (In Class)

Founded: 1979. Purpose: This chapter is organized within the vocational classroom. Activities and projects are planned and carried out primarily during class to relate to the occupational objective of Food Service. Dues: $3.00 per year.

LATIN HONOR SOCIETY (In class) Mrs. May –

Founded: 2006. Latin students who complete three consecutive semesters of Latin coursework with an A average are eligible to become members of the Latin Honor Society. Members are encouraged to support the activities of the Latin Club and provide tutor support for other Latin students. Students who complete three years of Latin and are members of Latin Honor Society are entitled to wear the Latin Honor Cord at graduation. This is an honorary organization; there are no dues.

MATH HONOR SOCIETY (Before School)

Founded: 1958. Selection for the Math Honor Society will require the following qualifications:

1. A student must have at least 3 semesters in Math classes at the

level of Algebra I, Geometry, and above with an average of 3.5

in these Math classes. This includes freshmen if they are accelerated. If a student has tutored 8 or more times in a math tutoring program, this work will contribute one additional grade point in calculating the student’s average.

2. An overall grade point average of 3.5 that must be maintained.

An average of at least 3.5 must also be maintained in math classes

to continue membership in the Math Honor Society.

3. The student must have shown participation and service in tutoring

programs, contest preparation for the SIU Math Field Day, WYSE, or Thinking Wildcats. This must be continued bymembers. Every member will tutor at least one 30 session before school, during lunch, or after school.

4. Membership dues and initiation fees of $4 must be paid before

the initiation ceremony.

If a student is approved by the mathematics faculty, based on the qualities listed above, the student will be notified of acceptance and the date of induction. All students must apply for acceptance into the Math Honor Society by the deadline given. NO EXCEPTIONS.

An annual scholarship will be awarded by the Math Club and Math Honor Society to a senior who plans on a math-related major and who has shown outstanding qualifications and service during four years of membership.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS - (Before school) Mrs. May-

Student delegations representing nations of the world compete in mock United Nations conferences sponsored by various colleges and universities. The team usually attends two or three conferences per year. Preparations include intense research into cultural, social, political, and historical background of the target countries and development of position papers on designated topics. At conferences students gain experience debating the issues, addressing their committees and interacting with students from other schools in developing solutions to real world problems. Model UN is not a club; it is a competitive team. Selection for membership is based upon GPA and citizenship. Students in grades 10 through 12 may apply at the invitation of the sponsor and will be selected on the basis of writing ability and scholastic standing. All students representing MHS in Model UN must be exemplary representatives of the school with no current record of discipline and must maintain an overall B+ average in order to take part in competitions. Students who serve on the delegation for four semesters and/or receive conference recognition are entitled to wear the Model UN Honor Cord at graduation.

NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY (A) Ms. B. Wilson/Mrs. K. Moseman. Meets as an A club in available art rooms.

Marion Chapter #201 of NAHS was chartered in 1981. Purpose: To acknowledge and further scholarship and talent in art as well as to further aesthetic awareness in all aspects of the school's total program. Membership: Shall be based upon scholarship, service, and character. The student must have been in attendance for a period equivalent to one semester in this school. To be eligible for selection, the student must be a sophomore, junior, or senior and shall have a minimum overall average of B. NAHS is a national organization sponsored by the National Art Education Association. Selection of members and sponsors must be teachers who are members of NAEA. Activities: Art shows, Initiation Ceremony, and special activities. This group also meets as an A Club.
