Required Materials (in addition to texts assigned on second page of lecture syllabus):
Textbooks for both Psych 300 and 301; Writing for Psychology (Thaiss & Sanford); MEL LAB package (with a blank floppy disk provided by each student). All students are required to copy or print psychological articles at their own expense. Note: These articles are to be found in academic journals or books (e.g., Journal of Applied Psychology), and do NOT include newspapers or magazines.
LAB GOALS:
The main goals of the Psyc 300 and 301 labs are to strengthen and support concepts covered in lectures, as well as providing additional training in design and methodology, analysis and interpretation of real psychological data using SPSS software, and report writing in APA style. Although the information covered in lectures will be combined, the labs (300 and 301) will concentrate mostly on their respective courses – due to the fact that students will ultimately receive separate grades for each course. Students are expected to come prepared for lab (with all required materials and completed assignments) and to actively participate in lab discussions.
POLICIES:
Lab attendance is strongly encouraged. Labs will often contain exercises that will not be taken home and will be graded based on in-lab participation (which counts for a large amount of your final lab grade). These exercises cannot be made-up at any time. Please see the grading criteria found on the following page.
HONOR CODE:
All lab work is expected to be the result of each student’s own work. Any violation of the GMU Honor Code will result in failure of the course and the submittal of a formal report to the university.
GRADING CRITERIA:
Labs will consist of 25% of your final grade for Psyc 300, and 40% of your final grade for Psyc 301.
