In the book, Ma Dear’s Aprons, the author and illustrator lovingly recreate a slice of turn-of-the century southern life. Life as it was for a single African American mother and her son. David always knows what day of the week it is, because his mother has a different colored apron for every day except Sunday. Monday means washing with Ma Dear scrubbing at her tub in a blue apron. Tuesday is ironing in a sunshine yellow apron that brightens Ma’s spirits. After the story we will use photos from the Library of Congress American Memory collection. The photos will show household items from the past and present. The lesson will promote young children’s thinking and observation skills as well as introduce historical information.

· The teacher will present photographs from the power point presentation.
· Students will be given the opportunity to identify early household items.
· After analyzing the older photo, another photo will be shown of the same object and how it appears in today’s world.
· Finally, both photos will be shown side by side for students to compare.

This lesson can be presented during Grandparent’s Day. Grandparents will be invited to visit the classroom. The power point presentation can be shown again. This time grandparents will be asked to share their past experiences and reactions to the photographs. Grandparents will assist at learning centers. Centers will include play dough with rolling pins and pie plates, an antique apple peeler, sorting buttons, and reading books with related themes in the Book Nook. Grandparents could also teach the children songs from their childhood during rug time. Examples are Mary had a Little Lamb, A Tisket, A Tasket, and London Bridges.
