Vocabulary—due to the needs of the students last week, we will be assessing the vocabulary for this week in a test on Friday.
As a class: Begin by reviewing the elements of a myth. We studied mythology previously in our year and we have read this story specifically, so this will be a story in review. Continue with the questioning and have students watch the close read. Allow students to work on their handout together, and then end with a collaborative discussion, “In the last sentence, the author says that Icarus”had thrown caution to the winds” he had made a bold and risky move. How had both Icarus and Daedalus made bold and risky moves? Share your ideas with your groups. Have students answer questions 1-6 on page 36 in groups. This must be turned in to the teacher in order to earn credit by the end of the period today. If there is time, move on to the close read of Arachne.
Make sure each group has one poster board. /
  1. Read 20 min. per night, record on Reading Log (due 3/6)

Pass out the close reader for the myth of Arachne. Students can begin reading in groups and/or individually. Students will read the myth on their own, and then in groups, they will begin to answer the close read questions. General students will be guided more closely than the Advanced students.
Advanced differentiation: Compare and Contrast Daedalus and Icarus with Arachne. What connections can you see between the characters and their actions in the two myths? How do these myths relate to the theme of Bold Actions. Use a top hat graphic organizer for this question, and let students complete it at their own table group. Ask them to include textual evidence for this comparison. /
