12 June 1989
Anita,
It was a pleasure meeting you at the reunion. I hope you had a safe trip home. We arrived back in North Carolina about 3 AM this morning. We had planned on stopping around Atlanta, but felt good and kept on going.
Here is the "TREE".
The genealogy runs like this:
Henry Newby married Mary ?. see page 6 (Will of dated 1741)
James Newby married Jane ?. see page 8 (Will of dated 1791)
James Newby married Edith ?. see page 12 (Will of Joseph Newby dated 1808)
I have been unable to verify a connection between Thomas Newby and the above James Newby; but I feel certain that a James Newby was the father of Thomas Newby.
Thomas Newby married Anne Atkins. see page 12 (Will of Phobe Atkins dated 1814)
James Newby married Sally Haines. see page 18 (1825)
Henry W. Newby married Amelia Crutcher. see page 23 (1860)
I suppose that everyone at the reunion yesterday
were decendants of Henry W. and Amelia Crutcher Newby; who were the parents of (see page 26). My grandfather was Thomas Alfred Newby.
My father was Roy Martin Newby.
I hope you enjoy the "TREE". It is fun to work on, especially when
you are able to find something new ever once in awhile. The library in Atlanta should have a wealth of information. The Historical section of the library in Huntsville in extermally good.

BELOW IS A LIST OF VARIOUS VIRGINIA COUNTY RECORD BOOKS THAT MAY HAVE SOME INTEREST TO THE NEWBY FAMILY.
VIRGINIA COUNTY RECORDS, VOLUME VII, PAGE 193:
LIST OF IMMIGRANTS WHO CAME INTO VIRGINIA. DOESN'T SAY WHERE. DATED 6 JUNE 1635. THEY CAME TO AMERICA ON A SHIP NAMED THE THOMAS AND JOHN. THE SHIP SAILED FROM LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND. AMONG THE PASSENGERS WAS A HENRY NEWBY, AGE 24. THE RECORDS SHOW THAT HE PAID HIS OWN PASSAGE. THERE ARE OTHER RECORDS THAT SHOW THAT SOME NEWBY'S WHO ARRIVED IN AMERICA IN THE 1650'S WERE BOND SERVANTS. BUT THE NAME HENRY WAS USED OFTEN IN OUR FAMILY. AS WAS THE NAMES THOMAS AND
JOHN. ....INTERESTING .... RECORDS SHOW THAT FAMILIES NAMED NEWBY RESIDED IN SURREY COUNTY, VIRGINIA IN THE EARLY 1700’S. IN CHESTERFIELD AND LANCASTER COUNTIES, VIRGINIA IN THE MID-1700'S, AND IN CULPEPPER, FAUQUIER AND ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTIES, VIRGINIA IN THE 1780'S.
VIRGINIA COUNTY RECORDS, VOLUME X, PAGE 51:
LISTS THE INDEX OF LAND GRANTS, HENRICO COUNTY, VIRGINIA. RICHMOND, VIRGINIA IS LOCATED 7N HENRICO COUNTY.
REV.A 12/87 PAGE 2 FAMILY
BOOK 11, PAGE 396:
SHOWS A JOHN NEWBY, 100 ACRES, DATED 17P5. OUR NEWBY FAMILY LIVED IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA. IN 1725, CHESTERFIELD COUNTY WAS STILL A PART OF HENRICO COUNTY, VIRGINIA" CHESTERFIELD COUNTY DID NOT SEPARATE FROM HENRICO COUNTY UNTIL AROUND 1733.
VIRGINIA COLONIAL ABSTRACTS, VOLUME 21, PAGE 84:
LISTS A JOHN NEUBY (SPELLED AS SHOWN) ON SWIFT CREEK. SWIFT CREEK RUNS THROUGH CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA.
IF YOU ARE DRIVING NORTH TOWARD RICHMOND, VIRGINIA ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY I-85 YOU WILL CROSS OVER SWIFT CREEK ON ONE OF THE HIGHWAY BRIDGES. THE NAME OF THE CREEK IS SHOWN ON A MARKER, AS ARE MOST RIVERS AND STREAMS THAT YOU PASS OVER; DRIVING OUR INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM.
IN THE SWIFT CREEK AREA OF CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA THERE IS A NEWBY ROAD, A NEWBY BRIDGE ON SWIFT CREEK, AND A NEWBY CROSSROAD" A SCRIMMAGE WAS FOUGHT AT NEWBY'S CROSSROAD DURING THE CIVIL WAR. I HAVE DRIVEN DOWN NEWBY ROAD BUT DID NOT IDENTIFY THE OTHER PLACES. BUT NEITHER DID I STOP AND ASK ANYONE AS IT WAS RAINING, ON THE DAY I WAS THERE. THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY WAS NOT OPENED ON THE DAY T WAS THERE.
THE FIRST CENSUS IN THE UNITED STATES WAS TAKEN DURING THE 1780'S AND PUBLISHED IN 1790. THE CENSUS LISTED 47 NEWBY FAMILIES. 2 FAMILIES
IN PENNSYLVANIA, 19 FAMILIES IN VIRGINIA AND 26 FAMILIES IN NORTH CAROLINA. THE CENSUS OF THE NEWBY FAMILIES IN VIRGINIA SHOW DATES OF 1782, 1783 AND 1785. THE CENSUS DID NOT LIST ALL THE FAMILY MEMBERS BY NAME, IT ONLY NAMED THE HEAD OF THE FAMILY. ALL THE OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS WERE LISTED BY AGE GROUP AND SEX. THE CENSUS SHOWED THERE TO BE 202 NEWBY'S IN THE 47 FAMILIES LISTED. THE CENSUS DID NOT BEGIN LISTING FAMILY MEMBERS BY NAME UNTIL 1850.
ACCORDING TO THE 1790 CENSUS, ALL BUT ONE NEWBY FAMILY LIVING IN THE STATE OF VIRGINIA RESIDED IN THE COUNTIES OF CHESTERFIELD AND LANCASTER. A THOMAS NEWBY WAS LISTED AS RESIDING IN THE ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY. THIS CENSUS WAS DATED 1782. THE CENSUS SHOWED THIS THOMAS NEWBY TO BE THE HEAD OF A HOUSEHOLD OF FIVE (5) PEOPLE AND FIVE (5) SLAVES. THERE IS A CHANCE THAT THIS THOMAS NEWBY COULD BE OUR THOMAS NEWBY. BUT COULD NOT NOT VERIFY. 1782 WOULD HAVE MADE OUR THOMAS NEWBY ABOUT 24 YEARS OF AGE. HE WAS BORN ABOUT 1758 THE BEST I COULD ASCERTAIN FROM MILITARY RECORDS. HE HAD BEEN IN THE ARMY FOR THREE YEARS, 1777-1780. HE HAD ENLISTED IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA. SO IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HE COULD HAVE MARRIED IN SOME COUNTY OTHER THAN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA. ALTHO I COULD NOT FIND A
MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE IN ANY COUNTY OF VIRGINIA. IT IS ALMOST A CERTAINTY THAT HIS WIFE'S FAMILY WAS FROM CHESTERFIELD COUNTY,

VIRGINIA. (MORE ABOUT THAT LATER) THOMAS NEWBY DOES NOT SHOW UP IN THE CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA TAX RECORDS UNTIL 1788. ONE SON JAMES (OUR LINE) WAS BORN IN 1788 AND ANOTHER SON MATTHEW, WHO CAME TO LIMESTONE COUNTY, ALABAMA; WAS BORN IN 1793.
THE 1790 UNITED STATES CENSUS LISTED THE FOLLOWING NEWBY'S AS HEAD OF FAMILIES IN THE STATE OF VIRGINIA.
NAME / COUNTY OF RESIDENCE / YEAR / GENEALOGY (MY INPUT)ELIJAH / CHESTERFIELD / 1782 / SON OF WILLIAM

OSWALD / LANCASTER / 1785 / BROTHER OF JAMES SR.
WILLIAM / LANCASTER / 1783 / BROTHER OF JAMES SR.
WILLIAM / LANCASTER / 1785
I HAVE SOME DOUBTS ABOUT THE ACCURACY OF THIS FIRST CENSUS. ESPECIALLY IN LANCASTER COUNTY. I FEEL THAT SOME OF THE NEWBY'S MIGHT HAVE BEEN COUNTED TWICE. THE CENSUS WAS TAKEN IN TWO DIFFERENT YEARS. 1783 AND 1785. IT LOOKS LIKE EACH NAME TAKEN IN LANCASTER COUNTY IN 1783 IS REPEATED IN 1785. THAT'S TOO MUCH OF A COINCIDENT.
OF THE ABOVE NAMES I KNOW THAT JOSEPH AND LEVY WERE BROTHERS OF, OUR, THOMAS NEWBY.(MORE ABOUT THAT LATER) THE JAMES NEWBY OF CHESTERFIELD COUNTY IS, I FEEL, THEIR FATHER BUT I CANNOT VERIFY. I ALSO FEEL THAT THE JAMES NEWBY OF LANCASTER COUNTY IS THE FATHER OF THE JAMES NEWBY 7N CHESTERFIELD COUNTY. AGAIN CANNOT VERIFY.
THE 1800 CENSUS WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY FIRE. I WONDER IF THIS HAPPENED WHEN THE BRITISH BURNED WASHINGTON, D.C. DURING THE WAR OF 1812.
THE 1810 CENSUS FOR THE STATE OF VIRGINIA LISTS THE FOLLOWING NEWBY'S AS HEAD OF FAMILIES.

WHERE IS THOMAS? HE WAS IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY AT LEAST BY 1788 AS HE APPEARS ON THE TAX RECORDS FROM 1788. COULD IT BE THAT HE WENT BY THE NAME NATHANIEL SOME OF THE TIME? IT IS KNOWN THAT NATHANIEL WAS A FAMILY MEMBER, OF THE JAMES NEWBY OF CHESTERFIELD COUNTY. (MORE ABOUT THIS LATER). THE 1820 CENSUS FOR THE STATE OF VIRGINIA LISTS THE FOLLOWING NEWBY'S AS HEAD OF FAMILIES.

AGAIN, NO THOMAS LISTED. BUT NATHANIEL IS. IT IS KNOWN THAT NATHANIEL WAS A FAMILY MEMBER. EITHER A SON OR A BROTHER. HE WAS NOT LISTED IN THE WILL OF JOSEPH NEWBY, WHO LISTED HIS BROTHERS AS THOMAS AND LEVI AND HIS SISTERS AS ELIZABETH AND MARTHA" THOMAS WAS NOT MENTIONED IN A LAWSUIT OVER THE PROPERTY OF JAMES NEWBY (WHO I THINK WAS THEIR FATHER) BUT NATHANIEL WAS., AS WAS ALL THE OTHER LIVING BROTHER AND SISTERS. MORE ON THAT LATER.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE 1840 CENSUS FOR VIRGINIA. I PROBABLY FORGOT TO TAKE IT DOWN. MOST LIBRARIES HAVE THE CENSUS, EITHER ON MICROFILM OR IN BOOKS.

THOMAS AND LEVI BOTH DIED DURING THE 1840'S. SO THE THOMAS NEWBY LISTED HERE MAY NOT BE OUR THOMAS. THOMAS NEWBY WAS LISTED AS A SR. WHEN HE DIED, IN 1845. BUT THERE WAS NO THOMAS JR. MENTIONED IN HIS WILL. ONLY JAMES AND MATTHEW OF ALABAMA AND ABRAHAM OF VIRGINIA. I DON'T SEE ABRAHAM ON THE CENSUS EITHER" COULD HE HAVE BEEN A THOMAS OR MARTIN?
