2000 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant Recommendations

Recommendation:
That City Council approve the 2000 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant allocations in the amount of $40,400.00 as recommended in Attachment 1.

Report Summary

The recommendations in this report provide for the awarding of 2000 Multipurpose Operating Grants to four Edmonton based organizations under the City of Edmonton Community Investment Grant Program.

Previous Council/Committee Action

At its meeting of December 16, 1999 City Council approved the 2000 Community Investment Grant budget of which $43,800 is for the purpose of funding the 2000 Multipurpose component of the Community Investment Grant Program.

Report

  • As provided in City Policy C211C, the Administrative Advisory Committee is responsible to review and make recommendations on applications for Multipurpose Community Investment Grant Program funding.
  • At its meeting of March 15, 2000 the Administrative Advisory Committee reviewed the applications and concurred in the above recommendation.
  • A total of four applications were received from Edmonton-based organizations providing broad community support. The Committee assessed each organization’s program performance, administrative structure, financial position, and evidence of public support for the applicant’s services.

Justification of Recommendation

  • The 2000 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant recommendations are in accordance with City Policy C211C, Community Investment Grants to Organizations and Individuals. An outline of each applicant’s program, financial position and grant history is provided in Attachment 2.

APPLICANT INFORMATION SUMMARY

THE EARTH AWARENESS SOCIETY OF EDMONTON

RECOMMENDATION:That a 2000 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant be awarded to the Earth Awareness Society Of Edmonton in the amount of $3,000.00.

DISCUSSION

The Earth Awareness Society of Edmonton is incorporated under the Society's Act as a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to stage the annual "Earth Day" event. Earth Day is the largest world-wide event that takes place annually with no specific religious affiliations.

Earth Day is a constantly growing organization world wide. The Edmonton event was the top Earth Day Event in Canada in 1999 attracting an estimated 29,000 people. The group also sends out environmental packages to all schools.

The Committee recognizes the fine work this organization is doing in promoting environmentally sensitive practices.

EDMONTON BLOCK PARENT ASSOCIATION

RECOMMENDATION:That a 2000 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant be awarded to the Edmonton Block Parent Association in the amount of $5,000.00.

DISCUSSION

The Edmonton Block Parent Association is incorporated under the Society's Act as a non-profit organization and is a registered Canadian Charity. The purpose of the Association is to establish Block Parent homes which provide a safe haven where help is available to children, seniors and others if they are hurt, lost or in danger. As well, the Association educates children about the Block Parent Program and promotes safety in the home and on the street. They are undergoing a Vision 2000 quest with a new Board of Directors and are working on creating further interest with the intent on gaining new members. They are also focussing on a Junior Crime Prevention Workshop which will involve parents and children.

The Committee recognizes the work that this organization continues to provide and the commitment to the citizens of Edmonton specifically assisting in creating an improved urban environment through safe and walkable neighbourhoods.

EDMONTON SAFETY COUNCIL

RECOMMENDATION:That a 2000 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant be awarded to the Edmonton Safety Council in the amount of $27,800.00.

DISCUSSION

The purpose of the Edmonton Safety Council is to create awareness and provide educational programs on how to maintain a safe environment at home, in traffic, at work and at play. The Edmonton Safety Council offers several training courses, programs, promotions, through the Kiwanis Safety City, and the traffic and bicycle safety program. The organization anticipates the construction of the motorcycle/bicycle facility as well as the completion of appropriate lighting for instruction on the site.

The Committee recognizes the continued growth and quality programming of the organization specifically their efforts on improving urban wellness through their safety initiatives.

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF EDMONTON

RECOMMENDATION:That a 2000 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant be awarded to the Junior League Of Edmonton in the amount of $4,600.00.

DISCUSSION

The Junior League of Edmonton is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The organization’s purpose is exclusively charitable and educational. The Junior League of Edmonton leases space from the City of Edmonton at an annual amount of $1/yr. The facility, C & E (1891) Railway Museum, located at 10447 - 86 Avenue houses an interpretative museum depicting life in Old Strathcona at the turn of the century. Tours are available at no charge on a year-round basis and used extensively by both Edmonton Public and Catholic schools. The league is continuing to expand the Books for Babies program to the Clareview area and are also reintroducing their “Impact Edmonton” program which focuses on literacy development at inner city schools.

The Committee recognizes the continuing efforts of the Junior League in Edmonton specifically with their recent early intervention initiatives that enhance basic learning opportunities for children and parents.
