The Sermon on the Mount

Judging

Matthew 7:1-6

Matthew 7:1-6 – “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

3“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?4How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

6“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Judging

Matthew 7:1 – “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

We ARE to have a discerning judgment of good and evil, false and true, and sin and righteousness. We ARE NOT to be condemning, critical or judgmental. We are not the capital “J” Judge. Therefore, our role in judgment is to partner with God’s people to present ourselves before the Judge in a proper way.

James 4:11-12 – 11Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.Anyone who speaks against a brother or sisteror judges themspeaks against the lawand judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it,but sitting in judgment on it.12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

John 3:16-18 – 16For God so lovedthe world that he gavehis one and only Son,that whoever believesin him shall not perish but have eternal life.17For God did not send his Son into the worldto condemn the world, but to save the world through him.18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

John 12:47-48 – 47“If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.48There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn themat the last day.

Measure Carefully

Matthew 7:2 – 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

·  Luke 6:37-38 – 37“Do not judge, and you will not be judged.Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Don’t Criticize or Minimalize

We often criticize other’s sin because we are self-righteous and have forgotten about our brokenness. We often minimalize other’s sin because it helps us to justify our own. Neither way is acting in love towards your brother or sister.

I Want Loving Judgment

1 Corinthians 11:31-32 – 31But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.32Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplinedso that we will not be finally condemned with the world.

Look at That

Matthew 7:3 – “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

Correspondence Bias (Fundamental Attribution Error)

The tendency to attribute someone else’s actions to internal character issues and to attribute our actions to external circumstances. Even when looking at our own lives we tend to attribute victories to internal character and attribute losses or failures to external situations.

(examples: late to work / Adam off the locker bench / Kristina when young)

John 9:1-11 – As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.2His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this manor his parents, that he was born blind?”

3“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,”said Jesus,“but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.4As long as it is day,we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

6After saying this, he spiton the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.7“Go,”he told him,“wash in the Pool of Siloam”(this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

8His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”9Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.” 10“How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.

11He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”

Destructive Help

Matthew 7:4 – How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?

Disqualified Advice

When we tell people that they should live in God’s plan, God’s ways and God’s will but we don’t believe it enough to apply it to our lives first, we are giving people the wrong view. (“God can save you but He can’t save this.”)

I can see clearly now the plank is gone!

Matthew 7:5 – You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

We should remove the speck in our brother’s eye but need to get right first.

Psalm 51:10-13 – 10Create in me a pure heart,O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11Do not cast mefrom your presence
or take your Holy Spiritfrom me.
12Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit,to sustain me.

13Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
so that sinnerswill turn back to you.

Luke 22:31-32 – 31“Simon, Simon, Satan has askedto sift all of you as wheat.32But I have prayed for you,Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Comfort don’t Condemn

Galatians 6:1 – Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spiritshould restorethat person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

Dogs & Hogs

Matthew 7:6 – “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Pearls

Matthew 13:45-46 – 45“Again, the kingdom of heaven is likea merchant looking for fine pearls.46When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

Dogs & Hogs vs. Sheep

Dogs and Hogs don’t understand the value of what you are sharing with them and are mad that it is not what they are looking. Sheep here their master’s voice and respond.

John 10:27-30 – 25Jesus answered,“I did tell you,but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,26but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish;no one will snatch them out of my hand.29My Father, who has given them to me,is greater than all[a];no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.30I and the Father are one.”
