Pearson Trophy Inter-County Finals Day – 28th July 2016
The Four Counties Finals Day for 2016 was hosted by Surrey at Leatherhead Golf Club.
The morning semi-finals were as follows:
1. Herts v Middx
2. Surrey v Kent
It was a good day for golf. Sunshine, clouds and not much wind. Kent were represented by Broke Hill. It was a first for Broke Hill. And they all looked very keen. A previous Surrey Manager commented that they were the smartest looking team in their navy kit with white and red trim. Along with caddies and supporters, Kent County Captain, Anne Billings, Vice-Captain Ingrid Longand Kent President Elaine Tappin were also there to support the Kent ladies.
Broke Hill were up against Leatherhead for Surrey. This was going to be tough, playing an Inter-County final against a team on their own course.A moment of drama! An extra putter was found in somebody’s golf bag. It turned out to belong to Claire, playing No.5 for Kent. Fortunately, when she got to the first green, the putter was returned to her just in time! That could have been interesting! Thanks to caddie, Bernie, for noticing the additional putter in his bag and ensuring it was reunited with Claire.
Leatherhead got off to a good start making full use of the home advantage. Our ladies held their own to start with but were eventually overcome. Leatherhead won 4 matches and the rest were called in. Kent were up and all square in two of the remaining matches. We are very proud of our ladies and hope that they enjoyed their first Inter-County final.
Well done to the Broke Hill team of:
Anne, Anne, Gill, Lisa, Claire, Kahren (captain) and Lynn. You did a great job, representing Kent against strong opposition on their home course. Thanks to you all, your caddies and supporters. And, for staying to support the finalists in the afternoon. Thanks also to Ingrid, Anne and Elaine.
The final was between Surrey and Herts (again!), who only just pipped Middx in the last match on the final green. The afternoon was a bit damp to start but it did not rain for long. Surrey got off to a flying start. Again, taking full advantage of the home course. The first match went to Moor Park for Herts. There followed three quick wins to Surrey. The 2nd match went to a nail-biting 20th hole before being won by Surrey. At the same time, a 5th match was also won. Final result 5-2 to Surrey.Well done to Surrey. Two years in a row.
The presentation followed shortly after. Losing semi-finalists receiving a framed certificate and the finalists receiving their trophies.
Next year, the Inter-County finals will be held at Hever Castle. Surrey have had the trophy too long. Let’s bring it back to Kent.
