Predicting Surgical Decisions of High-Risk Ulcerative Colitis Patients

The major goals of this project are to investigate the influence of medical factors, health beliefs, and, in particular, romantic partners and significant others on colitis patients’ decision to have prophylactic surgery to remove their colon in order to manage their high risk for colorectal cancer. The training program will build the PI’s skills and knowledge of biological and psychosocial issues in cancer prevention and control, methods for the study of close relationships processes, and advanced statistical skills for analysis of longitudinal data.

Reciprocal benefits of helping others: A peer support intervention for SCT survivors

The major goals of this project are to test a new and innovative peer social support intervention for survivors of stem cell/bone marrow transplant.Based on research on altruism, social support provision, and volunteerism, the intervention provides survivors with an opportunity to “give back” by helping their fellow patients. It is hypothesized to improve their quality of life through mechanisms related to peer support provision (e.g., enhanced sense of competence, self-worth, and relatedness) as well as those related to emotional expression.The project will also begin a line of research on the effects of exposure to testimonials or “survivors’ stories” on patient adjustment and decision making.
