CD SAMPLER PROJECT

In this project, you will create a sample of each piece of music from a CD. A “real world” application of this skill might be to generate interest in the album so that people might buy the CD.

1.  Rip an entire CD into the Media Player. Change the format to MP3 and put the songs in My Music.

2.  Create a project folder in My Documents to collect all your files. Name it CD Sampler Project.

3.  Open Audacity. Save the project as Class Hour CD Sampler Your Name into the project folder, ex. 3 CD Sampler Jane Doe. Open the first song in Audacity. Save again. Now go look in your project folder to see what Audacity saved. Is your project file in the folder? If it isn’t, start over, because the links will be lost if you move the file into the folder later.

4.  Using the Selection Tool , select the piece you want in your sampler. Leave a little extra before and after the clip you want because you’re going to overlap the tracks later.

5.  Delete the extra audio on each track .

6.  To add the next song to the project, use Project/Import Audio on the menu bar. The new song will open on its own track.

7.  If you were to play the file right now, you’d hear both tracks at the same time. Use the Timeshift tool to move the second track so that it begins when the first track ends.

8.  Continue adding the songs, trimming the tracks, and shifting them until you have all the songs from the CD in your file.

9.  Use the Timeshift tool to move the tracks so they overlap a little.

10.  Use Effect/Fade In and Fade Out on the menu bar to fade the endings and the beginnings of each song. Your project will look something like the picture on the right.

11.  You’re going to run out of screen space pretty fast. You can use View/Fit Vertically on the menu bar to see everything on the screen.

12.  Save the project again. You can continue to work on the file as long as you have the project saved.

13.  When you’re done working on the project, save the project one last time.

14.  Then Export the file as an MP3 and put it in the project folder. Name it Class Hour CD Sampler Your Name, ex. 3 CD Sampler Jane Doe. (Normally, you would save the MP3 in My Music, but I want it in the folder for grading purposes.)

15.  Drag both the entire folder into the Homework Dropbox.
