

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent or special diploma required.
Minimum of 60 semester hours from an accredited educational institution with at least 30 semester hours in general education core curriculum and/or child development and education or successful completion of the ParaPro test with a score of 464 or higher.
Experience working with children.
Experience working with persons with disabilities.
Strong desire to work one-on-one with a student.
Valid Florida Driver License.

To assist students with disabilities with classroom activities, modifications, transportation, and personal care needs as directed by the teacher. This person is assigned to one or more students with unique needs and may be required to move with student(s) if the school site changes.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to work effectively with children and teachers. Willingness to learn the unique educational and/or personal needs to assist a student with a disability.

Performance Responsibilities: Essential Functions

Assist the teacher in meeting the exceptional education student’s bus and assisting the students to the classroom area.
May be assigned to provide bus assistance to and from the student’s home.
Assist the teacher with the safe loading of the students on the correct bus.
Assist students with dressing and undressing and the care of clothing as needs and as directed by the teacher.
Follow instructions of therapists, health professionals and others to provide services to students;e.g., positioning, communication, feeding, tub-feeding, suctioning, catheterization, etc.
Assist in the maintenance of student hygiene; e.g., toileting, bathing, etc.
Assist in collecting data as documentation of student performance of Individual Educational Plan (IEP) goals.
Monitor students participating in community-based instruction.
Provide follow through on individual student’s behavior management program.
Participate in training provided by the District to enhance skills needed for working with exceptional students.
Provide outstanding customer service and use positive interpersonal communication skills.
Make all decisions and perform all tasks in accordance with Brevard Public Schools’ Organizational Values.
Ensure compliance with Board rules and applicable federal laws and regulations.

Assist, as directed by teacher, students in recreational activities as appropriate.
May be required to give medications to students in compliance with School Board policy.
Provide appropriate modifications needed as specified on the student’s IEP.
Perform tasks or services consistent with the job goal of this position.

Physical Demands& Working Conditions (ADA Compliance)

Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
