1.) For what are you asking? 2.) Why is the request timely and important? 3.) Where was the need identified? Please answer these three questions in 250 words or less. See instructions for further explanation.

The Nursing and Allied Health Department is in need of smart classrooms that have the most current technology. Because most nursing students are visual and kinesthetic learners, we are seeking to develop a smart classroom in 814B to support instruction and supplemental remediation. Eno-Flex Boards allow faculty and students to view and present data in a fashion that simulates what is currently being seen in the clinical practice setting. These boards are conducive to an interactive classroom environment that allows students and instructors an opportunity to fully utilize current software to meet the diverse learning needs. The current projectors that are in use are old with some being in place for over a decade. The costs and repairs to these projectors makes no sense since they only serve one purpose (projection) while the Eno Boards act and perform functions that are currently found in mobile tablets and phones. These smartboards also act as a computer screen and are viewable to the entire classroom. The included software of these smartboards enables them to increase student interaction whereby a teacher can integrate numerous/multiple items into a lesson plan such as websites, photos, videos, or integrative images that students can interact with, respond to verbally, or even write unlimited comments on the board itself. Image size and placement can change with a simple touch to the screen. As noted previously, interactive white boards provide an excellent and extraordinary opportunity to create classroom environments that students with different learning styles can engage and learn from each other.Such technology ensures that both students and teachers are developing current day skills which they will be able to carry over to the practice setting.

1.) Identify support from your 2014-15Comprehensive Program Review(CPR) or 2015 – 16 Annual Program Assessment (APA) for this request (8 points). Link to Program Review

The request of the Eno-Flex Boards is a based on a new direction that both the Associate Dean and Director of the Nursing and Allied Health Department envision as a way to support instruction, and supplemental learning and remediation. This request also correlates well to our previous report which supported the incorporation of newer and more updated hardware and software to meet the demands of graduating safe, competent, and knowledgeable nurses.

In addition, having greater incorporation of technology in the classroom will support much of the software that we are using right now from third-party vendors. Learning resources such as ATI help students pass their National Council Licensing Exam for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). For example we use ATI to assess the level at which our students are and whether they are prepared to pass NCLEX-RN. The Eno-Flex Boards will be able to work with ATI software in an interactive fashion when the material is presented to the class.

2.) How will this request help improve student learning in the course and/or program (12 points)? Link to Learning Outcomes

The following Program Learning Outcomes would be supported by the use of newer technology:

Design Problem Solving Plans (PSP) using the nursing process to direct and manage care of patients. The technology would support mind-mapping/concept-mapping to enable critical thinking and clinical reasoning.

Incorporate principles of environmental, informatics, patient and personal safety when using the nursing process to provide care for patients. This outcome is critical to the current technology that is also being used in the clinical practice setting.

Integrate knowledge of drug classifications used to promote, maintain, and restore optimum wellness. Software from current vendors would be easily transferable and interactive with the requested technology

Analysis of physiological needs for patients to promote, maintain and restore optimum wellness. With the highly interactive software that is currently available, the Eno-Flex would easily allow us to visualize that various pathophysiology of the numerous diseases processes that are being studied by all nursing students.

Pass the national exam for licensure in the state of California and continue lifelong learning. The nature of the interactive smartboards assists with critical thinking and clinical

According to the NEA website, interactive boards also support an interactive approach in the following ways:

  • Multimedia lessons and presentations including audio and video
  • Collaborative problem solving
  • Showcasing student projects and presentations
  • Virtual field trips
  • Recorded lessons that can be used by substitute teachers
  • Documentation of student achievement

2.) Please describe the connections between the goals you checked and your proposal (200 words maximum):

Strategic Goal 1: Better prepare students to pass the NCLEX exam and also transfer on to earn an Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.

Strategic Goal 6: the interactive nature of this newer technologies will engage all students to be more involved with their learning. The technology in the Eno-Flex is similar to tablets and mobile phones.

Strategic Goal 8: Engage students to make them appreciate the various instructional methodologies that are meant to improve their learning.

Explain how your proposal is supported by the following plans: 2009-16 Educational Master Plan (4 points), Distance Education Plan (4 points), Technology Plan (4 points) and/or Facilities Master Plan (3 points). Link to Plans

This request supports areas that address increasing the technology plan and facility master plans.

1.) Describe your goal(s) for this project (10 points). How will this improve student learning or enhance institutional services? For a review of goals, see pp. 18 – 20 of a presentation via this link.

Goals: 1. To maintain high pass rates with the NCLEX-RN (above 90%) for every graduating class. 2. To keep attrition rates below 10% for each course. 3. To improve student outcomes (above Level 2) on ATI proctored assessment exams.

2.) What are the measurable outcomes for this RAP (10 points)? That is, how will progress toward meeting your goal(s) be identified and/or measured? Click here for learning outcome reference materials.

Engage both faculty and students towards a more interactive classroom environment where they will be engaged in the learning process by using technology that they are already using on their tablets or smartphone.

3.) Explain how your outcomes are tied to your CLOs/PLOs/AUOs/SLOs (10 points).

The technology will ensure that students have access to the numerous resources that are available and currently used in other schools nationwide. The incorporation of this technology will also be able to support instruction and supplemental learning to enable to students to meet all quality and safety measures as listed on the QSEN.org website which listed expected competencies of all pre-licensure nursing students.

What are the steps that you will take or need to be taken to implement this proposal?

1.) Who is in charge of implementing the project (2 points)? Dr. Peter Zografos

2.) What are the projected start and end dates (2 points)? Spring 2016 semester- December 2016 semester

3.) What other departments will need to assist to assist with the acquisition/implementation of the project (2 points)?

Career and Technical Education

4.) When will the outcomes be measured (2 points)? December 2016
