Teaching & Advising

My activities as a Professor have not diminished with the passing of the years. My directions have partially changed, but the time that I dedicate to these activities has in reality increased. In the areas of teaching I have maintained my excellence, enthusiasm and innovations. My courses in Spanish Literature have incorporated contemporary criticism and the language courses in Italian, Spanish and Latin (when it was offered) have continued to be lively, interesting and successful. I simply quote the letter of the previous Dean of the College of Arts & Science, Judy Schaaf, dated September 30, 1996 which still applies to my activities:

“Throughout his long career at the University, Professor Giulio Massano has earned consistent praise for his work in all four categories of evaluation. An earnest, successful teacher committed to educating for the broader cultural contexts as well as the practical aspects of study in several languages, Professor Massano offers his students a teacher’s best gift: the example of excellence.”

In the area of advising I have been very busy as usual. I have advised language majors and minors as the Chairperson of the Department and students in the Humanities and Social Science Program.

Scholarship and Professional Activities

1984 – present40 Booklets related to Bilingual Education, published by Curriculum Associates of Billerica. Sample titles: Working with Words, Math Journal for Problems Solving, Skills for School Success, etc. These are books of approximately thirty pages that develop certain skills that are lacking amongst bilingual students. The booklets for students are accompanied by a manual for the teacher.

Papers delivered

I delivered papers at NEMLA (Northeast Modern Language Association) national conference, (Hartford, Pittsburg, Philadelphia, New York) and the Mediterranean Studies Association at their international conferences (Brazil, Spain, Portugal and Italy).

I was chosen among 72 international scholars to participate in the 400th Anniversary publication of “Cervantes Don Quijote”. I was requested to resurrect, transcribe, and bring to life one of the rarest editions of this work in the Piedmontese dialect. Only two copies of this edition exist. I was invited to go to Spain to introduce the edition and to be part of the celebrations. I was interviewed on the radio and delivered a paper in the town of Toboso in central Spain. This new edition is currently in print (May 2006).

Public Service

In these past years I have increased the activities in this area. I have become the “authority” on everything Italian. For the past ten years I have taught courses on Italian at BarringtonCommunitySchool, Southcoast Learning Network, BristolCommunity College and private groups. These courses are paid very little and last approximately 6-8 weeks per semester.

I have become an expert on Italian Opera and Cinema and have presented mini-courses at the Fall River Opera Club and New Bedford. Every year I give the keynote address at the “Italian Mutual Aid Society” which collects funds for scholarships for this university.

I also offered several courses on operas and Italian films at the organization “Second Half: Lifelong Learning”.

Starting this year, I will be conducting a course in Italy in the Castle of Nocciano on Italian Language and Culture. This program is organized by the Mediterranean Studies Association under the guidance of Profs. Taggie and Miraglia and it is directed to high school as well as university students.
