Minute Book references
p.368, 30 Mar 1863: The sub committee reported that they had examined William Bayly of Ash, nr Sandwich, Kent. He is 26 years of age and is married. He has a situation in the Provision trade and has a salary of about £50 a year. He has been a communicant about 5 years. He enlisted in the Kent Militia during the Crimean War. He attained the rank of sergeant but saved money with the assistance of his friends sufficient to purchase his discharge. He has had but very poor advantages in the way of education but has made great improvements by his personal efforts. His writing and spelling and manner of expressing his opinion are very creditable to his diligence and care. His thoughts were directed to the Mission by his taking up a LCM magazine from a heap of waste paper in which he read an account of one missionary being discharged for doing something wrong and some one else being taken in his stead and he wished it had been he. He is a young man of a cheerful temperament and has certainly good capabilities and is industrious so that there is every prospect of his becoming an intelligent and devoted missionary as his advantages are increased. The sub committee have great pleasure in recommending that he be sent to the Examiners. The testimonials of Bayly were then read, after which he was called in and examined by the Committee and on his withdrawal it was agreed that he be sent to the Examiners.

p.123, 19 Sept 1898: W Bayly was granted the £3.10/- for another year for his daughter who was over 17 years of age but unable to earn her livelihood.
p.263, 31 July 1899: “Dr Gilbart-Smith’s opinion be obtained on the health of William Bayly.”
p.270, 28 Aug 1899: “Wm Bayly having also be recommended by Dr Gilbart-Smith for the Disabled Fund, it was agreed that he be given two months rest at once, after which his case should be reconsidered.
p.292, 23 Oct 1899: “Wm Bayly being still unequal to active work it was agreed that he be placed on the Disabled Fund and allowed £1 per week from the same during the present financial year of the Fund.”
Obituary London City Mission Magazine, 1923 p 143
WILLIAM BAYLY was appointed in May, 1863. During fourteen years he laboured in Walworth (Lock Fields), removing thence to special work amongst ’Bus and Tramcarmen in South London. Here, for twenty-two years, he bore valiant witness for Truth, manifesting a rare patience and persistence which were his outstanding characteristics. A man of sterling worth, with special qualities of mind and heart, he adorned the doctrine which he taught, and saw it come to harvest in many lives. We noted last February the commemoration of his diamond wedding, and the fact that he had given two of his sons to the service of the London City Mission. Thirty-and six years our brother served the Lord Christ, and was unwearied in well-doing. In the fall of 1899, owing to failing health, he relinquished his work to younger hands, and after a quiet evening to life, he answered the heavenly summons on 25th May last in his eighty-sixth year.
